The Impact of Online Tutoring on International Baccalaureate (IB) Students

1. Introduction to Online Tutoring in the IB Context

This study examines the extent of the use of a specific type of online resource: online tutoring. This paper explores the various forms of online tutoring available to students and proceeds to ask if online tutoring has an impact on those students. We refer to the term ‘tutoring’ in a number of forms in order to meaningfully refer to all types of academic assistance provided in the IB setting. The ‘Honors’ College’, for example, offers supplemental instruction, teaching assistants, tutors and peer tutors, each of whom performs a certain kind of academic assistance to students. Online tutoring is provided by LeTutor (in partnership with the IB). The IB chose LeTutor to provide the tutoring based on LeTutor’s solution, methodology and successful case studies. In January 2006, LeTutor started providing online tutoring in the main DP subjects (Science-Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and two main languages, French and Spanish) to at least 44 students. This paper also seeks to explore the impact of the intervention of online tutoring in one school on the performance of those students. Finally, the paper offers some data as to the impact of the intervention.

This paper addresses the impact of online tutoring and its impact on International Baccalaureate (IB) students. First, this section introduces the concept of the IB programme designed for international-mindedness and its learners who are preparing for university entry. Online resources are in a growing trend and this can be observed in the context of the IB. Online resources are becoming an important point of reference for students; according to a number of published reports from the International Baccalaureate, students have indicated a strong preference for accessing resources from the internet as well as indicating a strong awareness of online materials provided via the OCC (Online Curriculum Centre).

2. Advantages of Online Tutoring for IB Students

Online tutoring can offer a range of specific advantages to IB students such as: availability of multiple resources via the internet to reinforce instruction; the worldwide web provides an endless supply of reputable resources, including scholarly articles, documentaries, educational textbooks, and videos; the broad range of resources available from various countries allows students to gain a better global perspective; tutors and support staff, available 24/7, at an online tutoring center can support those in need of immediate assistance, regardless of the time of day, including holidays; for immediate feedback, students can obtain access to multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and quizzes to reinforce their learning; and students can access interactive games and activities to reinforce learning.

Online tutoring is a growing area that offers many advantages. In terms of the IB, online tutoring makes it possible to offer help on both the DP and the MYP, with extra support such as extended essays or math explorations. As many students consider the IB exams to be their priority over the next few years, the OnPoint team has been preparing students intensively for these exams for many years. Online tutoring offers flexible, personalized interventions to meet individual needs. Centers operate 24/7 and cater well for the diverse needs of students. Appointments can be arranged at times to suit the student in different time zones. The tutor can tailor the instruction according to the learning style of the student. This is beneficial to students with special educational needs or students who require the tutor to slow down or speed up the pace of instructions according to their skills. This gives students the ability to learn in their preferred and individual learning style.

3. Challenges and Limitations of Online Tutoring in the IB Programme

A first and perennial concern is the technological infrastructure necessary to deliver online education. Many IB students come from around the world but, with the exception of many HSC (Higher School Certificate) examinations in Australia, the intake examinations of different school systems are written. Thus, IB students and an eventual online tutor would need to make the effort and have the stable internet access required to communicate with each other through video calls. In addition, they would likely travel to different countries to write the examination. Most unfortunately, many tutors have written that different parts of the world, even affluent parts such as Sydney, have repeated disruptions to their internet services. For instance, one tutor from Northern Italy noted that “I have not been able to teach anyone for the past two years because each of my students in turn suffered from technological failure that lasted over 4 months”. Finally, at a basic level, tutoring takes place at the level of the individual: a student who lacks access to the internet or who does not wish to seek the relatively unusual accommodations necessary to use online tutoring will necessarily not be able to avail themselves of its services.

Online tutoring has many advantages. However, there are several obstacles and limitations to delivering an IB-oriented education online. Thus, it is important to identify and address these issues to maximize the efficacy of online tutoring, which has been little addressed in the literature.

4. Best Practices and Strategies for Effective Online Tutoring in the IB Curriculum

Practical strategies. The following strategies are recommended as helpful guides for schooling staff, tutors, students, and families who are considering the use of online tutoring for middle years and senior students, and more specifically, the International Baccalaureate (IB). The IB Programme is difficult and students need support to help them succeed within the programme. The students themselves have varying attitudes to learning, interest in the topic, and need. The learning agenda should be made relevant to the student’s interests and needs and presented in a manner which can be easily understood. Online tutoring is one of the methods which can help the student to understand better the topic, assist with homework, coach and support for the internal assessments (IAs) and with the internal examination (Individual Research Report, IRR) and the final external examination. These strategies are reported to make a successful online tutorial. Engaging your students is the first practical strategy of any program. At the same time, teachers are competing with the bells, whistles, high-end graphics, and the billion-dollar graphics from multimillion-dollar games and private investment organizations.

Our last article on the impact of online tutoring on IB Diploma students outlined the major difficulties faced by IB students and offered practical solutions for families and tutors in helping these students successfully navigate their way through the IB. This article will focus on best strategies required to realize successful online tutoring within the IB. Clients are willing to pay good money for a tutor to get the job done online, but what do parents expect from an online tutor? This is a question many of us wrestle with when we offer our services online and need, therefore, to have a well-considered online offer. What strategies does the tutor need to establish a productive work relationship and to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the student, in order to achieve the goals set? This article establishes these strategies.

5. Future Trends and Innovations in Online Tutoring for IB Students

In twenty-first century education, a focus on transdisciplinary skills is likely to increase in response to the demands of a rapidly changing world. As we transform and change our roles in the future, the educators who make up the International Tutoring IB core, I believe, will follow continuing shifts in practice more likely than lead those shifts. The primary audience for this research information is our academic team and research community; the secondary audience is online tutors. I also envisage that the response of the student body of the IB to our evolving and pioneering work in offering online tutoring is influential to ongoing work, as it places the students at the center of learning and excites increased student engagement. I believe the demand for online tutoring will continue to grow over the years.

I believe that education will be further individualized in the future. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), personalized learning pathways, and adaptive learning software provide tools at the fingertips of educators and learners to make that scenario a reality. In terms of role trends, I believe online educators and tutors will increase their usage of inquiry-based teaching practices that model how International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) students engage with curricula through questioning. I feel that IB students will continue to have opportunities to utilize innovative technological platforms to deepen their learning.
