In this paper, we investigate how the existing research landscape can inform an understanding of when and how volunteers are, and are not effective as tutors. We use this discussion to suggest possible directions for future research.

Many students seeking academic help and many tutors looking for a flexible way to earn extra money have started or joined platforms offering free online tutoring. Many experts believe that free online tutoring is a viable and effective intervention, but others are skeptical about various factors affecting its impact and effectiveness. Free online tutoring can take many forms and formats, from simply having a peer or adult guide you in real-time, one-on-one or in a group through an online platform, to interacting with various resources, such as video tutorials or questions posted in a forum. Some platforms use video conferencing and chat windows for interaction, others operate through online problem sets or textbooks, and some execute assessments through adaptive software. Free tutoring operates as freestanding organizations and as programs embedded within existing schools and organizations.

2. Benefits and Limitations of Free Online Tutoring

The use of technology has been simplifying and reshaping the learning experience of the students for more than a decade. The pandemic of COVID-19 has led many educational institutions across the world to close, limiting the learning experiences of the students. Tutoring is always considered to be effective in this changing scenario. Free online tutoring programs play the same role but they convert the tutoring methods from offline to online spaces. The effectiveness of students who use the tutoring service is controversial. Some previous studies have proved that online tutoring helps raise student grades. Effects are often questioned because students who sign up for online tutoring may be more prompt and motivated and may have higher GPAs in general. Unlike these studies, this is based on the real-time impacts of an online instant tutoring platform. In this section, benefits and limitations of free online tutoring are described in more detail.

With COVID-19 changing the structure of schooling for the better part of two years, free online tutoring came into its own as a consequence of this change in instruction. Literature provides an abundance of recommendations for effective face-to-face tutor-provided instructional facilitation. However, the literature supporting effective tutor practices specifically for online instruction is less available. Statistically significant positive benefits exist for both college-level and secondary-level tutor-provided instruction. As part of what will I be discussing, I seek to establish best practices and strategies for online free tutoring programs by identifying those that are desired by participants and those present in the research that underscore the effectiveness of these programs.

The tutor program’s advocate utilizes recommended approaches for face-to-face instruction by increasing opportunities for students’ access to those who will work with them on their math homework and develop more positive attitudes towards mathematics. This program utilizes a flexible and efficient instructional facilitation to give both assistance and support in the learning of mathematics and enhances skills and mastery, allows students to express opinions and ask questions, make mistakes and clarify misunderstandings in a friendly and confident atmosphere, and develop greater motivation, self-confidence, and self-esteem. Opportune immediate feedback increases learning success for those needing it the most and makes the sessions worthwhile. These assertions hold in general as they apply to tutoring whether provided face-to-face in education, for employees in the workplace, online, or by intelligent tutoring software.

4. Case Studies and Success Stories of Free Online Tutoring Programs

This summer, I am working as a research intern for Dr. Richard Brinton, the Director of Writing in the Disciplines here at UW-Madison. Much of my work involves offline eyes-on-paper tutoring during the academic year. I related their stories when I spoke with high school administrators, university instructors, and/or my colleagues. They are also available as online resources on the Writing Center website, where they reach larger audiences and continue to inspire current and future users of Writing Center services.

Case studies and success stories constitute the real “evidence base” that practitioners seek when investing time, energy, and resources into implementing an innovation like free online tutoring. As part of its commitment to collecting evidence of effectiveness, this chapter presents a few success stories of alumni of the student/writer/tutor partnership who have used free online tutoring and online writing-intensive modules and resources to improve their academic performance and overall effectiveness as learners.

5. Future Trends and Innovations in Free Online Tutoring

Staying current in all licensure areas is especially difficult since the content courses are constantly changing, but its importance is essential to online tutors that need to deliver customized instruction, especially with ELLs. The technology is now available for many of the traditional practices of early intervention instruction, making online learning a readily available instructional practice as well. The growth in this online tutoring industry will continue to rise, due in part to the inability of most students to effectively arrange face-to-face meetings with professional tutors at times that are convenient for students. Currently, this type of tutoring has numerous constraints such as not being able to write directly on the screen, no visibility between student and tutor, paying for extra minutes or an hour of time, etc. In other words, online tutoring in its present form is not very effective. However, in the near future, we can expect online tutoring to have a number of features in place.

Some providers of online tutoring not only offer free tutoring sessions for students on a certain schedule but also review lessons and provide a host of materials that can be downloaded for students at any time for additional help in multiple subjects.
