In order to obtain this information and to establish a base for understanding the kind of tutoring prescribed in campus writing centers, one hundred university writing-center directors were sent a questionnaire. Eighty-one responded to the questionnaire. The information received from the questionnaires indicated that college essay tutors used a set of strategies to teach essay writing to their students and prescribed methods of the writer’s impact on the reader sounded, read, and looked to the reader. In this course of their study, both Bennett and Kock were able to survey specific and effective techniques and strategies taught by tutors to students to improve their writing and how to grade their progress.

As tutors teach these strategies and techniques, they encourage their students to adapt the strategies and include these techniques into their own writing repertoire for effective essay writing. The data collected from this survey demonstrate the effectiveness of these four strategies. Methods as a set for teaching essay writing should empower students to understand what the best writers do to succeed and encourage students to ask for and to search for ways to use those particular strategies within their own writing experiences for success. The purpose of this study was to find out what strategies and techniques tutors who help college students with their writing teach their students to become better essay writers.

4. Case Studies and Success Stories

Student tutee case studies are summaries of recorded interviews with the tutors. All of our tutees come from low-income and first-generation-to-college backgrounds. All have overcome significant challenges in gaining acceptance to college. Although the emphasis of our college essay tutoring is often on choice of content and what story the essay tells about the writer, we are not after college admissions at all costs. We emphasize throughout the process that the students should make final decisions when given a choice. With essays being important for transfer students as well as graduating seniors, not all essays got the students what they wanted when they wanted it.

In presenting college essay tutors and their tutees in Part I of this volume, I have painted a picture of the time, care, and attention to detail that these mentors and their young charges bring to bear in creating the absolutely best possible essays. We all believe that these essays moved the needle for one student after the other – the vast majority of the tutors and the tutees in this volume have given me an enthusiastic affirmative response to our question, “Did the essay work for you?” But that’s not data. Below I present the case study narratives and success stories collected by some of the essay tutors in Part III. Here, I have taken the liberty of presenting them anonymously.

5. Conclusion and Future Implications

As an educational intervention, the role of college essay tutors is one with potentially high importance. It is also an area in which we know little about the impact that tutors have on student success. This paper begins to address this gap in the literature. Results provide initial evidence regarding the effectiveness of college essay tutors in a setting where the undergraduate student body is composed of primarily low-income, underrepresented minorities. Meeting with an essay tutor appears to have a significant impact on continued student success, as measured by grades achieved in college-level courses. It is the hope that this evidence, as well as the methodology developed for this paper, could serve as a foundation for future research. Furthermore, at a time of increased interest in educational interventions of this type, the effectiveness of essay tutoring is a question that will become increasingly relevant.

Drawing from the work presented above, this paper has sought to understand the impact of college essay tutors, if any, on academic success. Results do in fact provide strong evidence that meeting with an essay tutor is significantly associated with improved grades across all subjects offered at the educational institution under investigation. Furthermore, the size of this effect is not driven by any particular group of students; tutoring meetings help all students, on average, perform better academically.
