Analyzing the Evolution of Poker Content: A Scholarly Review

1. Introduction to Poker Content

The research presented in this paper aims to articulate the different stages of the poker game, in which distinct practice modalities are recognized and analyzed. The method deployed in this study is of a qualitative nature: we collected several information sources like scholarly, as well as governmental, information from the Law, the Gambling Regulatory Authority, muchinhago apparel, blogs, and other online resources. Upon the analysis of the data, we have successfully verified the presence of 4 stages in the life of poker. These were baptized after the process’s own nature, i.e., growth, maturity, decline, and rebirth/preparation. In the initial phase of poker, corresponds to the moment in which the practices associated with poker experience a substantial degree of growth, licensing/regularization, and stronger enforcement of some of the existing restrictions.

In the last two decades, the game of poker became a worldwide phenomenon. Its adoption by online platforms, in which both professional poker players and fans of the game had the possibility of easily playing the game, talking about it and watching other people playing, transformed poker into an activity that stretches far beyond the game itself. Although many researchers demonstrated that poker culture involves different components such as the semi-formal regulation governing the practice of the game, the distinct values that are around which a community of players coalesce, and the different ways of knowledge transmission, until now, there is no scholarly work addressing the evolution of its content.

2. Historical Development of Poker Content

First, we provide some general comments about the list. With the notable exceptions of Bputs and Buller, published in 1718 and 1743, respectively, there was almost no theoretical work on poker in English principles during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Most of the poker content produced in that era was not scholarly. The second observation we make is that most of the publications on the list did not come from the world of intellectual production (defined as publication by professors, graduate students, or students). The format of the product (monographs) in the list, the language of the products, and the individual amateurs involved in their production of poker theory as a more traditional inspiration publication. These ancestors of poker theory are more rigorously understood as guides for card players of what later became poker strategy.

In this section, we provide a brief overview of the scholarly evolution of poker theory from the eighteenth century through the present. Like most scholarly projects, the theory of poker was more deeply influenced by advances in the area of other scholars and practitioners. For this reason, we believe it is important to give an account of the broader scholarly evolution of poker, providing a visual representation of it using as the main source the “Bibliography of Books on Poker,” compiled by Mulligan in the mid-1980s. The list contains full bibliographic information for 120 books divided into twelve different subject headings.

3. Types and Formats of Poker Content

Books are not the only source of poker instruction and educational content. Websites, forums, and videos have developed over the years that promise insight and advice about how to improve at the felt. As noted, the formats and authors of poker literature have begun to change as we see the emergence of more traditionally academic poker content delivered through disciplines such as poker studies and legal writings. Furthermore, it is evident that as technology evolves, the range of available formats for poker content is also expanding.

It is common for poker books to cover a wide variety of aspects of the game, such as strategies and tactics for different stages of a poker tournament, different types of games, including single-table and multi-table, online and live poker, as well as no-limit hold’em, limit hold’em, and pot-limit Omaha, and many others. In this study, because we focused only on hold’em, we were able to categorize books into either general hold’em strategy or poker in a specific stage or type of game to see how the preferences of players and writers evolved. Interview data enhanced this view and allowed for more nuanced discussions of player preferences.

4. Impact and Influence of Poker Content on the Industry

The answer? The Internet suddenly became crowded with information analysts, who were either great at disseminating popular advice or quite simply lacked the intelligence to understand the game on a profitable level. In either case, players were motivated by both personal financial reasons as well as what serves as a fundamental desire among humans: showing off. Lounge2 sometimes plays live games at the Borgata and part of the experience of being a recognized player is the ability to predict and think correctly in situations where other players make mistakes at an alarming frequency. A very large number of people reiterated the same theme over and over on the forums: I want to beat people playing poker… and look smart while doing it.

A variety of media and industries have been impacted by poker. The poker boom inspired networks such as ESPN to create niche programming for the game. In the late 2000s, Full Tilt Poker, a major online poker company, took this even further by sponsoring entire poker shows and signing celebrities to be “Team Pros” representing their company. With the amount of sponsorship opportunities and the rise of reality TV stars, the game of poker saw an explosion of young, impressionable “wannabees” looking to take up this unique game as a hobby or a profession. Curiously enough, this entire future market asked themselves the same question at one time: Is there anywhere on the Internet where I can learn to play?

5. Emerging Trends and Future Directions in Poker Content

Growing demand created a substantial pool of resources and discussion venues. Interest, development, and the money inherent in poker provided significant incentives for research and analyses. It did not take long for numerical analyses of the game to catch up, as exemplified by a proliferation of websites, user forums, hand discussion websites, and they came along with poker software, allowing players to take advantage of freeroll and “play money” tournaments from anywhere in the world. The explosion of public poker interest is revealed in just a few searches of popular books analyzing the games, such works on PokerOdds, PokerTips, and 888poker. Randomly sampled web poker advice at that time revealed a very high concentration on forum-based advice (72%), leaving much less than a third of the samples to complete two published works on poker or traditional “go-to” web sources.

Poker has evolved significantly in the past 15 years. Changes include a profound growth in popularity, the creation of legitimate professional circuits, the rise of a stereotype-breaking professional, changes in table technology and playing options, and academic research and conferences that highlight the depth and breadth of the game. Given how dynamic the changes are in the game itself, our analyses emphasize the dominant theme of evolution in the content of poker books. This shift can be expected over time given the relatively short history of poker in comparison to other topics such as medical terminology or algebra. Continual debates and rapid changes in effective strategies were difficult to capture in written content, primarily the book format.
