Researchers often need to review often simply because a review of literature or other grey literature was created some time back, and due to reasons such as legislation changes, guideline changes, imposition of new rules or regulations, practice or initiatives driven by central government, the research review of literature is no longer fit for the purpose it was originally intended. Researchers often perform interim reviews. They can still be faced with a choice whether to go through the process of preparing a new review or to simply update the previous review. The choice is likely to depend on reasons for reviewing, the review scope and aims, the characteristics of the review, the time elapsed since the last review was prepared, the study relevance, and whether it is more cost-effective to update compared to doing a new review.

Review of literature is not an explicit research method since its purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of key aspects of the research topic. Nevertheless, researchers do engage in the process of content reviews and use them to formulate new research methods or proposals. Although researchers undoubtedly possess valuable skills in conducting content reviews, there are a number of challenges that researchers come across, and many novice researchers might not be aware of these types of challenges. Thus, instead of learning through haphazard experimental trials, the effectiveness of content reviews conducted by academic researchers would benefit from the development and sharing of best practices.

4. Tools and Resources for Streamlining Content Reviews

Depending on the task at hand, there are a variety of tools that can be leveraged to help streamline and improve the efficiency and accuracy of content reviews, such as those listed in Table 3. In terms of more specialized tools, there are also text analysis and natural language processing tools that can be used to automatically clean and preprocess textual data. Such tools can be highly efficient for developing and coordinating coding dictionaries and then assisting in the initial steps of text preprocessing. Once integrative tools are fed a collective dictionary and data, most can also serve as an automated server that provides content review interactions through an API. Given enough time, specialized tools can be used to yield rich information that can be used for more comprehensive results, but leveraging less specialized tools can be a cost-effective, practical way of streamlining less specialized and complex content research tasks.

Once the process of dividing files across coders is completed, it is common for researchers to struggle with how to best streamline the actual process of coding academic content. In order to provide practical guidance for automated content reviews, there are a host of tools, software packages, and other resources available. While numerous options exist, some of the most popular and versatile tools can be found in Table 3. This selection of general and specialty tools can be used to optimize various components of academic content reviews, from internal management of research activities (e.g., project and document management) to specialized servers and APIs to automate academic content reviews directly.

5. Conclusion and Future Directions

The present text is organized in the following manner: in Section 2, a discussion on a systematic review is performed, commenting on several different procedures generated by the academic community and derived from methodologies of analysis in industry-specific markets that, if individually performed with the same goal, could lead to a distorted conclusion about objectivity (less subjective error) of work. In Section 3, the theoretical framework for the discovery surveillance qualifier representing the boundary of knowledge is discussed. In Section 4, the systematic literature review is presented. Finally, the proposal of this work for a continuous content review of the groups’ publications under analysis is presented in Section 5, followed by the conclusions in Section 6.

The scientific academic community has identified rapacious promotion of academic products in increasing impact factor or H index indicators through self-citations, modified credit sharing of scientific articles, dubious field journal selection, statistical manipulations of academic products, bibliographic review, double borders, and high occurrence in predatory publications, among other suspect practices. In addition, they were also identified in the reproducibility/non-repeatability of some works. For this purpose, in this work, we discuss the association, in a systematic literature review, of continuous content reviews in a certain scenario represented either by the group of successful publications proposed by our group or by the dismissal of interventions before they penetrate the market through regulatory agencies such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Brazilian ANVISA.
