Engaging Writing Prompts for 5th Grade Students

1. Introduction to Writing Prompts

There are many writing prompt activity books available. However, these have all been tried in a normal classroom and encourage students to use favorite subjects or activities to inspire their writing. As with all teaching, the more you believe in and enjoy each lesson – your enthusiasm will naturally spill over to your students. So it is with creative writing and teaching writing to students. Let’s write! Select all of the writing prompts that you would like to include.

Practicing writing is fun when it’s presented in the context of a favorite book or movie. Add one or more of these engaging prompts to your current 5th grade writing unit to encourage activity on the part of your students. With prompts that pertain to high interest concepts such as favorite things, making decisions, and deciding what not to do, your students will normally enjoy writing time. Encouraging interaction with creative writing may not necessarily depend on complexity, but it’s delightful when it happens. Romping through elementary school reading, writing, and enjoying creative prompts allows good practice and fun. 2. Narrative Writing Prompts

4. Imagine finding a locked trunk in an attic filled with a toy, a dusty diary, and a run that was very old and covered in dirt. Write a story about the treasures in the trunk, including a new adventure you create and how these found items help you. Be sure to include conversations and descriptions that help your reader understand how special these items are to you.

3. Tell about an adventure you recently had, such as riding a bike in the woods or exploring the city in search of hidden treasure. Your story should be written in the first person and use “I” and “me” to describe all your actions.

2. Describe your favorite playground toy. Now write a story about a wonderful day of fun that you had with this toy. Begin your story with these words: “The toy was so much fun.”

1. If you were caught in a huge rainstorm that lasted for two days, what would you do? Write a story about this experience, using lots of persuasive details to describe the setting and characters.

Here are some narrative writing prompts that may interest the students to write captivating stories:

Narrative writing is adjoined to storytelling. It’s the earliest form of writing and gazillions of stories have developed as narrative is a characteristic of human beings. Stories are magnificent, and writing one is just doing to add extra bolded points to your social skills. It’s healthy for children to be bored and create vivid stories in their heads, but confirm that they write them down.

3. Descriptive Writing Prompts

Write a story about how you feel when you look in the mirror in the morning. What parts of your body are the best? What parts of your face are the best? Draw a picture of your story.

Write a description of a store that sells only cookies. Create a menu of different types of cookies such as chocolate chip, peanut butter, hearty oatmeal, and decorate one large cookie of your dreams. What would it look like? What ingredients would you put in it?

Imagine that a new student has come to your school and needs to learn the class rules. Write a list of things that you think the new student needs to know. Be sure to list some descriptive words that have to do with things you do or have done at your school.

Write a description of the hottest day you can remember. How did you stay cool? What things did you see? What did you hear?

Imagine that you are a snowman that magically came to life. Write a story about your day. What things did you do? What did you see? What did you learn?

What makes good descriptive writing? Good descriptive writing includes many vivid sensory details that paint a picture and appeals to all of the reader’s senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste when appropriate. Descriptive prompts are base-level prompts that grant students a lot of freedom. They could choose anything from a simple backyard game to a holiday gathering or a family vacation. Just be sure that you are encouraging the right amount of description for the age group you are working with.

4. Persuasive Writing Prompts

Some people say that no pets should be allowed in a park because they might bother people and try to figure out ways to get their pet to do what they want to do someday. Do you agree or disagree with this belief? If you disagree, where would the park also be located? Write the book Red Pine Lake by keeping the park allow pets or not?

Newspaper Editor David Butler wrote that people in Grand Island, New York are fighting to save their coast. The coast in Grand Island got flooded last spring and now people are trying to raise money to fix up the coast. Many witnesses can see that the forest is in pain because of strong waves from the wind. The waves can lead to dramatic changes and cause a forest to disappear. Write a persuasive statement describing the techniques that can be used as well as the best place on the coast using the techniques your group determines to rebuild a coast.

Some people say that more types of nuts should be served soft in your school cafeteria. How can this change help the students in your school? Do you agree or disagree that soft nuts, or crackers, should be available to students? For some ideas about what to say in your response, refer to the recipes in Sally’s snacker book.

According to a newspaper article, the Danville, Virginia City Council approved a ban on all backyard chickens in the city. How would you feel if your town banned backyard chickens? Do you think that chickens are a good or bad idea to add to your backyard? Only things that weigh no more than 10 pounds are sold in dollar stores. Your task is to convince the dollar store to sell something that weighs more than 10 pounds. Local support is a good idea!

Each year, a school wishes to honor those who died in the World Trade Center Tragedy and thank those who tried to help on September 11th. In your opinion, what is the best way to demonstrate this recognition and why?

Some people believe that January 6 should be a celebration. Do you? Why or why not?

Do you believe snow days are good or bad? Write a persuasive response to the question; include specific reasons and examples to support your argument.

With all the violence and terror around the world, parents and others are trying to protect children at almost all costs. Some areas are just too dangerous and too far away from help to risk a visit. You see, this petting zoo is in a park with a fenced-in stream that separates the zoo from the rest of the park. Not all areas are as well marked as this one, however. In a letter to the editor, persuade people not to consider this type of “adventure.”

5. Creative Writing Prompts

Edutopia recommends making poems about real life. Poetry can be fun and not as intimidating because there is no right answer. Many different forms of poetry can be used. Haikus are only a small 3-line, 17-syllable poem. The first line has five syllables and the last line has seven. This poem tends to describe an image, but haikus do not have to. Limericks are humorous, 5-line poems that are often used to tell a short, humorous story. They follow a rhyming scheme of AABBA. Finally, an acrostic is a type of poetry where the first, last or other letters in a line spell a word. To write this type of poem, you would describe the word in each line. This may or may not form a complete sentence when read from top to bottom. By using creative writing prompts, students will be able to get the ideas in their mind flowing. When they write regularly, the grammar and vocabulary that they know will come forth. Encourage the use of adjectives and descriptive language in their work.
