Engaging Writing Prompts for 3rd Grade Students

Having a good writing prompt is important, but also allowing the students the ability to respond to the prompt in a way that allows them to express their feelings and emotions in a sharing environment without the fear of ridicule is key. Not every student will be interested in the same writing prompt, so having a variety of writing prompts for students to use is essential to creating an environment where every student feels comfortable and has the ability to share their ideas. Providing a variety of prompts will ultimately provide purpose and motivation to write.

Think of your favorite place in the world, and describe everything about it. What can you see, smell, and touch when you’re there? 5. Describe your favorite toy, including what it looks like and why it is important to you. 6. Write a story about a mysterious house that another kid tells you has so many toys in it, the floor is literally made of dolls and plastic cars. What else does he or she say? What really happens when you visit? 7. Describe your favorite tree, including the tree’s size, shape, and how you feel when you see the tree. 8. You find a strange-looking creature under your porch one day. Choose to describe him in the rain, at sunset, or in moonlight, and talk about how he looks against that particular backdrop. What does he do?

A descriptive writing prompt asks students to provide a written description of a person, place, or thing. This type of writing prompt takes a straightforward approach to writing, letting young writers explore how they can create a descriptive atmosphere.

Think of a time something special happened to you. You can take the story you thought of and write about it for your story. An important part of writing is to interest your readers in your story.
