This paper is the first output of a project that reviews a broad range of social science research, and related areas such as the arts and humanities, in order to better understand the contribution that these fields are making in relation to global challenges. It represents the first piece of the underpinning evidence used to test and develop a comprehensive analysis or map of different aspects of this research that will be a key output of this project.

2. Theoretical Frameworks in Social Sciences

Guiding concepts about the special makeup of political inquiry place an overriding emphasis on the study of struggles over and the exercise of power regarding such issues as the generation of a common identity and the distribution of resources and rewards, and indeed pose questions concerning the strengths and weaknesses of political institutions addressing such issues. The immediate rating of these approaches reflects their practical importance, but a striking limitation of both analytical/prescriptive and critical renditions has been their conservative tendency to turn toward the status quo. The lineage of the approach illustrates one of the central paradoxes of the study of political legitimacy: the endeavor of critical thinkers to expose and change false claims of justification leads them to build normative arguments based on the preservation of order and personal and common security as well as, in some versions of social contract theory, private property and other exclusive rights as central dimensions of justice.

After a brief introduction on how data might inform the understanding of the impact of the social and behavioral sciences, the first article encompasses society’s pushes for more social and behavioral science research. Following this multi-topic lead, the components of several articles highlight the social sciences’ contribution in communicating and educating society about social and behavioral research in the public interest. The topic on research that informs educational practice and policy – when, why, and how, involved in educational value and research opportunities, was the subject of an extensive coursework delivered in the 2016 Summer Institute in Computational Social Science. Its outcome and ramifications are both grounded in computation methodologies. The themes of other coursework are represented in the remaining articles.

In this part, we present thirteen articles that offer empirical analysis of social sciences such as education, political science, sociology, psychology, and economics. This effort draws from our discussion of key details in Part I. Included are statistical case studies, surveys, and economic text analysis among other methodological approaches. Each of the articles has been reviewed by a research analyst who details the methods and data collection. These articles are contemporary, authored by a diverse collection of U.S. and international scholars. The contributions were chosen across the variety in the utilitarian, practical, and reactive families of social sciences. The collection of articles covers a range of issues and impacts, and sets the stage for further exploration.

4. Ethical Considerations in Social Science Research

This structure must guarantee that the internal rules and principles of ethical research conduct will be implemented, rather than being the subject of open discourse without bearing rules and principles. 5. Conclusion and Future Directions

In summary, this analysis provides a contribution to an emerging and important field of academic inquiry for both the advancement of theory regarding the ways in which social sciences and society interact and the practical implications of these different interactions. With increasing governmental emphasis on impact in social science research activities and the parallel growth of funding to stimulate it, it is crucial to develop our understanding of what this research is for. It is not for creating intentional effects, but it is about understanding how such intentional effects are brought about. These are unintentional outcomes of intended lives. The distinction is important in justifying the purposes of social research and, more importantly, for safeguarding those purposes from misinterpretation, misrepresentation, and manipulation. The nature of human life is infinitely varied.

The aim of the chapter was to conduct a critical analysis of the conceptualization of the various modes of interaction between research and society or, more specifically, the social sciences and the rest of society. The common goal of most of the examined modes of interaction found in the literature is the improvement of societal conditions for the welfare of the deprived. However, it is important to bear in mind that shifting the attention of social scientists to the dialogue between academic and societal actors (impact on society) should not encourage us to overlook the significance of the information that goes from societal to academic actors (impact of society). It also suggests a different understanding of the research agenda-setting, which takes into account both academic and societal knowledge, and the role of various other stakeholders in the co-creation of innovative science promoting economic interests for enhanced societal impact. Finally, the aim of this chapter was to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the public value of social science by exploring several conceptual nuances in the terminology employed and suggesting a broader reflection on the interplay between a range of stakeholders, first and foremost society as a whole.
