1. Introduction to Book Reports

Your goal when writing a book report is to show off what you’ve read. In the process, you will get to learn about your book in a way that no one else can, because everyone reads and experiences a book in his own way! You should always remember that while someone can steal your words, no one can ever steal your interpretation of the story. Always write about a book as if you are the only one who has ever experienced it. You are both guiding your reader through the plot, and showing her what the book meant to you and why it mattered. Writing these reports will also help you learn to communicate with other people, both your friends and those who you may not know – in other words, the other members of your book club.

Now that you’ve started your own book club, you have the perfect excuse to read those books you’ve been wanting to read, and the added benefit of talking about them with your friends. As if that weren’t enough, you even get to practice writing book reports about these new books you’ve read! In this guide, you’ll learn a lot about how to write interesting, engaging book reports that will get everyone talking. You’ll learn about the different parts of a book report, and have the chance to try some of these elements with a report of your own. By the time you are done with this guide, you will be a book report-writing master.

2. Choosing the Right Book

To help narrow down the books you want to read, focus on books that relate to a field of study that you enjoy. What subjects in school do you particularly love? Horses, food, scary things, mysteries, native cultures, planes, sewing, or dancing? Maybe you love the subjects of family, food, work, sports, theater, or school. Consider the characters you want more of. Or maybe you like reading books that make you think about the future, the past, the paranormal like ghosts, or books about beliefs and gods, or books that always have a happy ending. Or maybe you like series, or books related to reading. The subject of a book report can relate to a hobby, sport, or game that book reports do not mention. Including a review of an interesting book can help readers expand their own reading horizons. It will likely be easier to write a report on a book that you already love to read, as you will know the context of the story and its characters.

How should you choose a book to write a report on? The obvious answer is, choose a book that you enjoy reading! You will be spending lots of time thinking about and writing this report, so if you try to write about a book that bores you, the process will surround you with feel-good monsters. Step away from the report. Instead, choose a book that you enjoy and think about why you realize you are reading a book that you want to know better. Books are written to convey an author’s message. They tell stories and carry information. On the other hand, sometimes books are written to make money, so they have sensational covers. The cover might make you think it’s interesting. If this is your browsing method, evaluate the cover after you have read the book to see if the cover had relevant, helpful illustrations or design elements related to the content. If the cover never comes up in the story, reflect on whether the cover aided your understanding.

3. Summarizing the Plot

When you summarize the plot, make sure to tell the beginning, middle, and end of the book. You should not go into much detail, just an overview so that the other readers become interested in sharing the fun of reading that book. What would you want to share about the story that would get another person interested in finding out what the book is about? Be sure to always include the theme or lesson of the story in your report. The theme is the message the author wants to share with you. It is what the main character learns or realizes in the story. The lesson is the message you learned by reading the story.

A book report is a way to tell others about a book you’ve read. A good book report should include the book’s title, the author, and a summary of the book. It should also include your opinion. The title page of the report should include the title, the author’s name, the publisher, and the number of pages. You should always get your teacher’s permission before starting any type of project at home. Another important part of a book report is to include the illustrations. They add to the book and help tell the story.

4. Describing the Characters

For your book report, if you borrowed one of the library packets, you would fill in character cards where you would include the descriptions for the main characters in the book. You will also illustrate the characters with color and detail so that people who look at your project will be able to see what you see when you read your book. You will label the illustrations with the characters’ names and who drew them. Since you do not have your packet yet, draw the characters on regular paper and label them with the characters’ names.

Whenever you describe the characters, there are always many things to think about. First, describe what the character looks like. Is the character tall, short, or somewhere in the middle? What color is his or her hair? What kind of clothes is he or she wearing? The more specific you can be, the better. Second, talk about what the character is like on the inside. What is the character’s personality? Is he or she shy, giddy, nervous, or clever? What are the character’s talents or fears? Did the character change over the course of the story, or stay the same?

5. Sharing Your Opinion and Recommendations

Once your opinion is finished, you can tie up your report with a suggestion for others and a summary: “I would recommend this book to Andy, who likes these kinds of stories. This is because the book has a lot of action.” A summary lets your listeners know that the report is finished: “Well, that is the end of my book report. Thank you for listening.” Then you can answer any questions your listeners may have.

When your report is completed, it is time to share your opinion of the book with others. Did you enjoy the book? Do you think others would like the book? Remember to always give reasons for your opinion, rather than just stating your thoughts. Giving a reason can help you to sound convincing and will also provide details to your listeners that they can consider when deciding whether to read the book.
