The Art of Expository Essay Writing: Examples and Techniques
To be effective expository research writers, we must identify and limit our subject. If we should, for example, select the subject of locomotives because we have a deep personal interest in these magnificent examples of industrial design, we would probably fail to write an interesting expository essay about them. This, of course, could be our fate if we should fail to analyze our subject to discover its central and significant features. But, no well-examined subject – whether it is a homerun, “Joey” the champ boxer, “Jellybeans” the prize steer, a lovable pet, the charming girl, or Gatsby – is tiresome. Although there are lots and lots of homeruns and prize steers, for instance, we each recognize sexless characteristics around each that distinguish him from any other homerun or prize steer in the world.
Exposition, which means to explain, is the most common way we communicate. We constantly explain to others what we think – our ideas about particular subjects and difficult issues. As high school students, we make our most important contributions by addressing ourselves to subjects and problems that concern and interest us in our capacity as students. Our teachers frequently ask us to write expository essays because we are required to do so in different exhibitions, contests, society meetings, and college applications. In simpler terms, the expository essay notes the distinguishing characteristics of a thing, person, place, concept, or idea and then tells how the thing or person or place or concept or idea is different from and alike with all the others in the class to which it belongs.
The Common Core State Standards require that students are writing informational writing as early as Kindergarten. In the Common Core State Standards model, this type of writing is referred to as ‘expository writing.’ Trying to keep with the changes we are embracing in education, especially in the light of the Hallmarks model, when writing informational summaries, we are now calling this type of writing the ‘expository essay.’ What the expository essay in and of itself accomplishes, the development of clear expression, logically arranged as well as clearly articulated, is a tool for both learning and useful communication. That such a succinct explanation of modeling for students exists fulfills the need for the expansion of new instructional processes not just for writing but for different strategies across the general education curricula.
The term ‘expository’ comes from the word ‘exposition.’ Exposition is ‘a statement or type of composition intended to give information about (or an explanation of) an issue, subject, method, or idea.’ It is a literary term that refers to a writing or speech that clarifies, explains, or defines a certain topic. So in the expository essay, the focus is on explaining an idea in a clear and concise manner. There are key elements which characterize the exposition essay. These are the organization of the constituent paragraphs and written sentences. The use of special transitional words and phrases helps control the structure of the essay and guide the readers from one idea to the next and finally to the conclusion. At the end of the introductory paragraph of an expository essay, there are the three primary supporting points and these are each elaborated in dedicated paragraphs with each of them.
Persuasive essays, on the other hand, are designed to persuade people of a point. They are less mechanical and more formal than technical writing or reports. Think about what you might write to convince someone the claim is right. Try using rhetoric to argue the position. You should also look at examples of published essays, as well as give you ideas. Remember that style even refers to the tone that is needed as well. It is most often difficult to persuade other people to converse in a particular manner.
There are some structures that are always the same for all essays that one should follow: – The coherence of form should be submitted. – Introduce the topic and give your attention getter. – Clearly state the thesis. – Summarize all the major points.
The structure of the expository essay is held together by the following: – A clear, concise, and defined thesis statement that occurs in the first paragraph of the essay. – If the paper does not include a thesis, the purpose will not be clear. – The thesis should focus on connecting the issues given to the assignment and the general arguments of the essay. – The thesis should clearly set out a claim and should articulate the main points that support the claim. – The thesis and the attached essay should be designed from the point of view of the audience. However, be forewarned: it’s often not easy to persuade other people.
In order to study or write expository essays, it is important to know the specific types of expository essays. Always remember that the expository essay is intended to expose and, as such, it plays an important role in the business, technical, and scientific communities. Figuring out what one is supposed to include in each section may be difficult for beginners. However, after some time, a structure will begin to emerge. The more specific the requirements, the more detailed the structure will be. Notice also that these texts are all of a specific type. Four types of expository essays are informative, persuasive, exploratory, and imaginative.
An expository essay presents a balanced analysis on a subject. In an expository essay or any other type of legal thesis, it is vitally important to clearly present the facts, analyses, and opinions of both sides of the issue. No matter who the prominent professor or chairman is, the university’s sun and shield logo must come. It is more common in academic writing than any other type of expository article. It could be done through comparing and contrasting, definition, examples, the analysis of the cause or effects, etc. A 500-word load when the 1250-word requirement will far exceed the good standard, and the final reason is a detailed paper in a light analysis.
Plan to divide your composition up into three elements: the outline for your expository essay. Do not tell yourself that you will write the entire expository essay in one hour, because you will discover that it is now about time to come around to the other side. The first step is to brainstorm for the expository essay. Then, sort out your notes into a cohesive outline to direct your writing. It will keep your writing on topic and organized. It is always a helpful idea to permit others to analyze your composition.
When following up on the facts, the writer has to make sure that the reader will have the means to act upon the data. Pay extra attention to specifying particular programs or websites the reader can use to further research the topic at hand.
– Provide data from various published sources such as textbooks, articles, websites, etc. – Offer particularly clear explanations to topics that are not referenced in common textbooks. – Describe any equipment the reader will need to replicate the presented information. – Save opinions for the argument, personalized understanding of facts is critical in expository writing.
The writer supplies the reader with concrete, provable facts about the given subject. From these facts, the reader will form whatever concept the writer intended. To gather the information, the writer should:
3. Apportion facts the right way. Expository paper should allow the reader to stimulate or understand something without including his or her personal feelings or perspective. Rather than trying to obtain strong information on your facts and data then think about it from the standpoint of the reader. No one will enjoy reading a paper that is merely a string of factoids. The writer is asking the reader to ask, what facts do I need included in the paper, so that person isn’t just presenting me with a pile of information?
2. Don’t use first person. In other types of essay writing, the first person point-of-view is generally not used. Accordingly, steady use of third person causes the essay to sound more factual and not subjective. Furthermore, use of the first person will make the essay sound as if it is based only on the writer’s opinion instead with factual evidence and data.
1. Always use third person. Unless a person is in a physically-intensive profession, a body will waste away with inactivity. Because of the health benefits of regular exercise, a person who does not exercise will suffer from physical ailments.
