Employment regulations are tougher than ever, increasing the need for oversight on hiring and firing of new employees. With the increase in technology, managers today have two concerns as they relate to managing: profitability and survival. From the empirical research that was conducted in different professional groups, it was evident that there were differences in career development as a result of obtaining a University MBA using different groups of employees. There is a myriad of MBA programs offered by SA universities, and even though some of them could be of high quality, a qualification does not necessarily guarantee expertise. At present, too little is known of knowledge and skills that could yield better services. Following the research objectives, the purpose of the article was to determine firstly what the characteristics and motives are of the Bureau of Market Research (BMR) MBA students and graduates, secondly, to gauge their perceptions regarding differences in promotional opportunities and in promotional characteristics as a result of obtaining the degree, and thirdly, to make some recommendations with regard to the program and other such programs from the research findings.

In comparison to the first Master of Business Administration (MBA) program that was launched in the USA in the 20th century, the contemporary degree can be considered to be a relatively new addition to the South African higher education landscape. With special reference to the public sector, there seems to be a dearth of empirical research that has been conducted in the past postgraduate qualifications, particularly in the field of human resources. The research reported in this article is intended to shed some light on the impact of the MBA in Human Resource Management on career development of managers and directors in the Gauteng Provincial Administration.

3. Career Opportunities and Advancement with an MBA in HRM

Human resources professionals not only understand the inter-workings of their organization or business and their strategic framework, but they possess the necessary competencies to exploit the contributing role human capital plays in that strategy. It is impossible for HR professionals’ functions to have a positive impact on organizational success if students do not appreciate the strategic framework of their employing organizations. For example, the nature of the employer’s business, marketing techniques, production cycles, operations strategies and service delivery approaches are all critical pieces of information necessary to understand prior to formulating the organization’s staffing or remuneration strategies.

An M.B.A in HRM can prepare me for any number of leadership positions in human resources and other areas within any number of companies. These are good jobs to develop nations in so far as they seek gainful employment. A career in human resources is typically sought by those desiring a leadership role in their organization, whether an organization is public, private, or not-for-profit. One of the ultimate goals of an M.B.A in HRM program is to prepare students for roles as HR managers and directors in public and private organizations with the necessary strategy, knowledge, and skills to modify and design HR practices in complex and changing organizations.

4. Key Skills and Knowledge Gained through an MBA in HRM

Reforming HRM accreditation criteria for BS- and MS-level programs can pave the pathway. Changes should encourage business departments to build unemployment applications, skills, and knowledge over four to six years. Students will need more basic and specialized business knowledge and skills and a broader liberal arts background than traditional business education programs require. A final vital goal is to enforce a more hands-on approach to the four-year undergraduate programs, giving students valuable hands-on business talent preparation before graduation. Only then will new HRM-educated graduates sustain a serious market challenge from accrediting MBA programs that can readily demonstrate student aptitudes and enabling business knowledge and skills at a significantly higher level.

Just as any specialized master’s degree program, an MBA in HRM provides specialized knowledge and business skills at the postgraduate level to college graduates. Programs in MBA in HRM will include core subjects such as managerial skills, economics, finances, Information Technology, and elective and specialized subjects such as compensation, accounting, industrial relations, leadership, labor law, and career development. Job search and interview technique workshops are included to prepare students for the end of their studies and entry into the employment market. Other types of learning activities at the MBA level might include working in interdisciplinary teams, problem solving, case analysis and presentation, project management, and developing executive presentations.

In this paper, it also studied the future trends in HRM education and suggested some ideas for improving the HRM MBA education strategy.

This paper undertook an academic study about the impact of the Master in Business Administration (MBA) in Human Resource Management (HRM) on career development. To do this, firstly, it studied in depth the basic concepts of HRM and HRD and the process involved in the career development of managers and executives. After that, it studied the structure, contents, and added value of the MBA in HRM and the main contributions that an MBA could give to improve managers and executives’ career development. In this research, it evaluated the perception of MBA students of HRM master about their career development after the end of this postgraduate program. The main conclusions of this study indicated that the knowledge taught in the MBA in HRM has a high impact on career development and that the MBA is perfectly adapted to the needs and demands of managers and executives to improve and progress in their career.
