It has been defined and redefined, reconstructed and further formulated, and it seems that this process will go on for all times to come.

2. The Diversity of Life: From Microbes to Mammals

Biology is an extremely complex subject of study because it is incredibly diverse and is composed of countless living organisms, which exist in many different forms, sizes, and shapes. Moreover, living specimens are found in almost every conceivable environment on Earth, right from the cold icy waters of the North Polar ice cap to the scorching sands of the Sahara Desert. Increasingly, as each year goes by, numerous new plant and animal species are uncovered in a variety of remote, inaccessible locations.

The vast diversity of such living forms is known as the biota or, in technical terms, the biodiversity of our planet Earth. If we were to describe life on Earth in a single sentence, we would say that all living things come in a myriad of complex forms and characteristics and are made up of complex chemical compounds. The term biology was coined from the Greek words ‘Bios’, which means life, and ‘Logos’, which means study or science. In Darwin’s day, we knew that many importantly European geologists had accumulated vast amounts of information that indicated that the Earth was older than 6,000 years. They had evidence that suggested that the gradual erosion of a cliff or the piling up of layers of sediments in the river could account for much of the variation in the structure of the Earth’s surface. Recognizing that the age of the Earth would have a profound influence on the nature of biological change made Darwin more determined to establish it. He knew of the history of geological thought and appreciated its methods and had read the works of Lamarck and other earlier evolutionists. He pieced together a revolutionary understanding theory on the grandest scale, one to which the most ambitious phase of geology and eons could provide the evidence of time needed to make this new brand of organic descent the grooming.

In the early nineteenth century, while still a medical student, Charles Darwin made an observation that changed the way people thought about the natural world. He realized that members of a population of organisms often differed in their inherited traits and that all species tend to produce more offspring than the environment can support. These inequalities lead to the idea of natural selection, the process in which the environment among populations of heritable characteristics of species.

The second major unifying theme is evolution, the concept that explains both the unity and diversity of life. In biology, evolution refers to the processes that have transformed life on Earth from its earliest forms to the vast array of organisms that exist today. Although much of the discussion has focused on the history of life, the same biological processes that occurred in the past continue in the present. As a result, patterns of change continue in the future.

4. Cellular Biology: The Building Blocks of Life

There are cells with a single membrane, that are both eukaryotic and prokaryotic, and cells that also have a second external membrane, that are only eukaryotic and are included in the protista kingdom. Eukaryotic cells are organisms that have an embryo or undefined nucleus. This means they have no membrane separating the genetic material from the cytoplasm. Eukaryotic cells are usually unicellular and simple, sometimes showing differentiations like bacterium called cyanobacterium, that has a differentiation to capture the sun and perform light photosynthesis, giving it a green-blue coloration, characteristic of the phylum. Bacterium is a unicellular prokaryotic organism, which means it has an embryo or undefined nucleus and also that it has no membrane that separates the genetic material from the cytoplasm.

Cells are the fundamental building blocks of living organisms. They impart structure, function, and metabolism to life. Without cells, we would not be able to do anything and would not live. Cells are a structural and functional unit from every living thing. We, humans, for example, consist of around 100 trillion cells. Each of our organs depends on this large quantity of cells. Each cell has a unique structure and exercises specific functions. There are organisms with only one cell, like bacteria or protozoa, these cells are unicellular. And there are organisms with more than one cell, and these cells can be eukaryotic or prokaryotic.

We’re surrounded by examples of fascinating ecosystems wherever we look on Earth. Think about the wetlands that filter pollutants from water, or the trees and soil that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. These are just a few of the many vital ecosystem services that help human society to exist, and that we often take for granted. By studying ecology, students and professionals are able to understand, manage, and help to develop the intricate ecosystem processes that keep our world running. In ecology, we learn to look at natural ecosystems or groups of species as complex systems of life and matter, always dynamically changing.
