1. Introduction to the Humanities

The educational landscape has increasingly acknowledged the strategic significance of humanities study while reimagining the area’s role in guiding students through their studies to realize their career ambitions. The humanities area is invaluable in guiding aspiring professionals to areas where they can maximize their potential. This chapter highlights the various elements at the core of the humanities in diverse university contexts, and in the process, explores how we can work with students moving forward. We consider traditional subjects and academic departments within the humanities, while also taking into account multidisciplinary areas that span the humanities and social sciences.

2. Key Disciplines within the Humanities

Although few would argue against the value of the best contemporary examples of architectural fine writing, poetry, the key disciplines are valued for their contribution to the development of students’ communicative and critical thinking. If, in addition to these aims, the disciplines also contribute to the moral and spiritual aspects of students’ preparation, then the status of these subjects is vast. Indeed, the interdisciplinary nature of particularly the undergraduate degree programs is parallel to the interdisciplinary attributes of full participation in organizations and organizations furthermore.

3. The Role of Humanities in Society

The national level – where most policy is directed today – is not where the humanities exert the greatest influence, precisely because it is generally reactionary and ideological, as the heritage model and the current liberal-inflected critical emphasis on class, race, and gender indicate. People are too complex, life is too varied, and change is too rapid for inflexible and veneered solutions to be of significant use in dealing with sustainable or satisfying policies. At this societal level, it becomes apparent that the provision of a meaningful education relies heavily on the humanities to pull the educational enterprise together – both in direct provision in the general and individual context, in providing ways for other subjects to be taught, and in related, engaged action in the social and cultural community.

It is in the nature of human beings to respond to the demands of the moment, often with little consideration of extended social implications. This can lead to changes in the character of our collective lives, which can reverberate destructively through our institutions. Thus, we can provide a rationale for the humanities that is both specific and universal, showing how they offer us a way to understand ourselves, to study what styles and possibilities of humanness are opened up by alternative institutions. This specific concern finds extensive but largely implicit expression in criticisms of the deficiencies in education that train individuals inadequately for meaningful lives and employment.

4. Challenges and Opportunities in Humanities Research

Exploring the Significance and Impact of Humanities Studies The introduction of new and successful partnerships between science and industry that are oriented to increase mutual skills and benefits, and the burgeoning debate in many industrial economies on the need for research and its funding, underline the critical role which new university-based research initiatives play in harnessing these relationships. There are clear and concrete political expressions of this growing recognition. In 1999, the U.S. National Commission on the Humanities declared: “The case for the social and economic value of the humanities is beyond dispute.” In parallel, the European Union has insisted that the need for interdisciplinary work in the humanities must be recognized, and emphasized the political role of universities in general, and of the humanities in particular, in the context of cultural integration of Europe. The Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences has recently been discussing the terminology of the various ways in which universities contribute to society; it characterized the potential direct societal benefits of humanities research as follows:

Alongside questions of funding and a lack of cultural and social recognition, it is worth considering some of the specific challenges and opportunities that arise in developing more collaboratively organized humanities research. In truth, humanities researchers themselves recognize that there are internal issues that must be addressed if the substantial opportunities of collaborative work across disciplinary and national borders are to be realized. Areas of particular significance include: the capacity for research leaders to provide clear directions and a steering role; the balance between providing access to, and promoting new uses of, proven data sets and methodologies on the one hand, and encouraging new kinds of research on the other; the need for administrative support for collaborative projects with a humanities content linked to multimedia and multilingual technologies; the potential erosion of quality of peer review; and the likely reinforcement of existing inequalities within the academic community.
