3. Techniques and Materials in Canvas Art

The experiments were focused on mechanical properties, hygroscopic expansion, color, crampness, and compatibility between two priming layers. The study resulted in providing insight into the changes taking place in the priming layers during painting cycles and gave answers to the following questions: What is the influence of each layer in the priming system? These, together with the already observed optical effects of deterioration of fibrous priming, gave us a valuable approach for quickly identifying substandard priming from the Renaissance to the early 20th century. The performed experiments and methods could provide a new base of information for accurate interpretation of the master’s layout layers, which can be transferred to a precise understanding of the artist’s work. Their work brings us much closer to the understanding of the secrets of painters. In this presentation, we try to evaluate the re-historic evaluation of materials and techniques used by the individual artists during the peak of the historical culture.

A number of experiments were carried out to test this theory. As early as the third century, the practice of impregnation or priming and the resulting putrefaction from substandard materials were thought to be the cause of painting defects. Our analysis of many defective paintings from different centuries and countries told us about the priming coats. To further assist painting conservators, as well as art historians or collectors, and for a general understanding of canvas painting and their fabrication, we decided to further our research. Therefore, we present the results of our new experiments on priming coats. Our work has revealed some new and unexpected physical properties of priming and helps in understanding their historical role for canvas art by answering the related three questions of how, when, and why.

A famous movement between the early 20th century (precisely ’20s and ’30s) is surrealism, where Salvador Dali is referred to as the absolute master of it. Cubism, instead, is remembered as a sort of movement that made the previous trends look totally antiquated. Its father was Pablo Picasso, together with G. Braque. Fauvism arose in the early 1900s, whose most known exponent was the French artist Andre Derain, and then it was followed by expressionism, with the works of Toulouse Lautrec, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Otto Dix. With expressive technologies such as electronic ink, digital brushes, and flat screen expression, more variations are made on greater levels of control and usage for digital painting. The most important and emerging trends in contemporary digital painting are based on altering the digital canvas or building the features related to one or more of the traditional features used in the painting art form, which include form and design, shading and lighting. Various characteristics of the oil painting process have been mimicked effectively in digital painting software as temporary and permanent modes, ink blotting, shading and blending.
