The history of African Americans has been too often marginalized, overlooked or otherwise neglected. In the words of the documentarians who crafted the masterful series, Eyes on the Prize, African American history has customarily been relegated to a role as footnotes in the larger context of American history. The tragedies don’t stop there; we have also been done a disservice through a selective editing process that has diminished the legacies of monumental achievers who have added immeasurably to the rich mosaic that constitutes the American experience. The principle motivation for the establishment of Black History Month is to showcase and teach about the extensive and exceptional contributions of African Americans to the improvement of human life on a national and global scale.

2. Historical Origins and Evolution of Black History Month

The growing emphasis on comparative Black history during the 21st century is also critical to the ultimate success of Black History Month. As critics of Black History Month and detractors of African American studies exercise considerable power to shape and control public representations, the cross-racial solidarity that Black History Month has traditionally engendered is now assuming an increasingly coalition-driven focus.
