We have identified four broad roles for business as a social institution: establishing and managing the infrastructures of a democratic capitalist society so as to ensure that democratic capitalism functions properly; providing a place to work and to find personal meaning and motivation; generating the goods and services that society values; and, finally, offering leadership in ordering life based on treating people with respect, as having equal status, and as being free to choose their life paths.
