The Importance of English and Literature Courses

1. The Role of English and Literature in Education

Language plays an important role in education. In order to ensure effective communication in life, the understanding of the role of language is crucial. The key role of language, in all the stages of students’ lives – in their relations to the visible and invisible world – is an undeniable fact. But for us, given the importance of a philosophical approach to educational questions, the question acquires a particular importance. The problem of language is not only a pedagogical problem, it is a matter of philosophy itself. For every particular problem of science can ultimately be reduced to the question of knowledge. Meanwhile, each particular science is just a search for a specific focus. But the characteristic of philosophical problems is to be universal. They give birth to particular sciences, which are specific orientations. Now, philosophy with the help of a new science finds no answer to any singular question, because it gives birth to it from any point of the universe and in its various dimensions.

Apart from English language, literature courses have essentially been taken by university students, but the main reason might be to fulfill the minimum credit requirement. English language courses, however much one is interested in them, are courses that have been obligatory to take for both an English language prep school and departments, by reason of graduating from departments.

There has been a high demand for English language courses. In a changing scenario of education, when globalization comes to the forefront, the situation is not different. More importance is given to the teaching and learning of English as university students understand well that the use of English language in their lives is growing. University students study English courses not only to get credits for the completion of their degree, but also to prepare themselves to become professionals with effective use of English language in various sectors of the market. To be effective, they need to master various skills of the English language. In this setting, language courses are of paramount importance.

2. Exploring Literary Genres and Styles

Other writers undoubtedly benefit professionally through such freedom. Students and novice writers, however, are a different audience. They find valuable the distinctions among literary genres as they often possess relatively green, muscular literature as readers. That mutual label which their teachers use to loan them text does matter. 3. Analyzing and Interpreting Texts

A communication-friendly atmosphere in the community, schools, college, by college faculty, and at home; familiarity with math; good intuition and logical thinking; and strong logical analysis, perceptive interpretation, and mathematical communication skills are essential to professional advancement, workplace encounters, personal interactions, and career enrichments. The freshman-level English writing, language, and literature courses and the sophomore-level English literature courses intend to provide all students, including engineers, a fluent, versatile command of the English language, as well as cutting-edge, rhetorical, and/or practical, word-skills, dressed up in the pyjamas of literary history, discussions, exercises, assessments, outside-class writings, quizzes, discussions, practices, recitations, evaluations, reflections, laboratories reflections, reactions, workshops, room conversations, dialogs, exercises, activities, and technologies. “No comfort without effort,” Aristotle claimed with passion. “Time’s rosette” requires our students to contribute personal opinions, actual words; actual reasons. Mandatory core courses are stepping-stones to the merits of a well-rounded education. Students report measures of their learning of concepts in the pedagogical and class design domains on a regular basis throughout the semester.

To understand and be understood in any field, you have to know how to understand and how to be understood. English has the tools to help you do both. Whether you intend to study subject areas in the sciences, social sciences, engineering, or the arts in college, career, and life, you must be able to analyze, understand, dissect, opine, translate, interpret, and summarize complex technical information that comes your way. And you must be accurate, detailed, concise, clear, and eloquent as you communicate technical information. “The ability to express oneself is a gift not other creatures can claim,” writes Wade Davis, a National Geographic resident scholar. The expertise to talk about science in clear, cards, fluent, jargon-free terms, with an engaging voice and an interesting script, is a gift anyone can develop. For more than 50 years, the Rochester chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, has encouraged hundreds of students to recognize that gift and use it for a greater purpose. College is a wonderful time for voice discovery and skill building.

4. Developing Critical Thinking Skills

Richard Paul and Linda Elder, both leaders in critical thinking theory, suggest that the development of the mind occurs through dialectic thinking, or as it is inferred through inquiry. Inquiry invites exploratory dialogue throughout the mind. “If used in a dialectic approach, dialogue leads to critical thinking and can easily trigger constructive thinking and discussion. When the challenge facing the students is less than that would have allowed for richer conflicts and dialogue,” therein, they become challenged to raise their level of thinking, becoming participants in the discussion. But when there is cognitive incongruence, one seeks actively to resolve it.” Using literature to spur dialectic conversations in the classroom, students will activate higher levels of thinking by asking simple, closed-ended questions. They will then begin to engage in exploration by seeking answers to those questions.

Reading a range of genres and understanding the functions and language of the text helps students from a young age to examine and develop critical thinking at higher levels. As students question, interpret, and evaluate text within the various literary carpet. It also connects students to outside challenges and conflicts through them. In addition, literature is “effective for cognitive growth.”

5. Enhancing Communication and Writing Abilities

In the end, one way or another, we all benefit from developing a wide variety of communication skills, things that offer new perspectives, great literature and poetry. Before embarking on the teaching of communication, we must not only understand that communication is the process, but the desired result is comprehension. Nobel Prize winner Patrick White concurs. “Writing is an incurable disease,” he said. “You can’t stand it and you can’t stop.” Writing has been a yearning, an urge – a makeshift soul-patch, just short of an actual function. It is worship of a kind, devotion wrapped in passion, enigma threaded with pain, surrender sundered with joy.

English and literature courses are part of developing all of these skills which are vastly important for the task of being understood or having significance in the mind of a contemporary person or the wider global spectators. The sad truth is that writing is becoming an endangered essential; bad writing usually means bad thinking. Words are communication. Possessing the ability to both empower and disempower, words are the foundation of expression and communication. However, words have gotten overshadowed by visual culture to a certain extent. Certainly, words are still important. This is why people still gripe about illiteracy. With such emotion, one wonders how can this task not seem alive and well? How can one mistake their persistent relevance? Each generation witnesses its struggle with the next as a consequence of poor communication. Poor writing ability has separated generations from each other.
