The Importance of the American Economics Association

1. Introduction

In short, the principles of the AEA are made up of two great values, which are also the two main “considerations” of the association: freedom to conduct research and the belief that the methodology of economic research helps to explain and treat the problems of public use. Surely the largest, most arbitrable, diffuse and uncertain problem of society. After all, 131 years ago when it was founded, and from then until the present, the main objective of the AEA has not changed: to promote economic research and its applications, to become a platform of dialogue and reflection on the problems of public interest, both for the government and for society in general. If the AEA has not changed its main goal, it is because the goals must undoubtedly correspond to the principles, which are the same for a year, such as 1454 or 2022.

2. Role of the American Economics Association

The AEA is a group of approximately 20,000 academic and non-academic economists who are members of the association. The AEA’s 2023 annual meeting, which will attract many of its members, is a major event that has each year close to 15,000 participants from around the world, although the 2021 first pandemic-period meeting had about 5,000 participants, but of the throughout history worst disaster of the field businesses. Members create many of the association’s publications and activities, including eighteen publications which are part of the American Economic Association’s Family of Journals. Most importantly, the professional economics of the nation, whose standards are maintained by the American Economics Association, are a fundamentally important part of the national dialogue. The use of the economic way of thinking in policy analysis around the world has clearly benefited from the contributions of members of the American Economics Association and economists trained at schools in the United States.

3. Contributions to Economic Research

The second group of major contributions, I call ‘government services’, and include those which the AEA gives to the larger community, particularly to Washington and particularly to Congress. How does the AEA do this? Four times a year, 2 days before the regular weekly meeting of the Board of Governors, about 3 months before the regular, semi-annual committee meeting of the Congress, the AEA issues its paper on government finance. That paper, utilizing, as long as last time, the most advanced and hence more likely to be expensive techniques of economic analysis, presents the economic dimension of the country’s general fiscal and monetary problems. The Association in 2019 created a “Harassment Task Force” to address conversational conduct and the broader “culture” of the economics profession.

The AEA website includes a tab on the home page for “Policy”. The slogan for the policy program is listed as “Economics for the nation”. Many of you who read this newsletter may be familiar with the editorial page of each edition of the New York Times. Commentators who contribute to these pages include knowledgeable economists, public officials, and others who have a view on social and economic issues. When the list of article contributors includes the name of an economics Nobel prize winner, there is a graphic to the left of the author’s name saying “Nobel laureate”. The editorial page of the New York Times is where a lay person might go to understand academic research on important policy issues.

5. Conclusion

I have not tried in this column to anticipate the full range of the experiences likely to comprise your year as A.E.A. president. I have merely suggested some of the projects occupying your predecessors and quite a few of the special characteristics of our association but I hope I’ve provided some incentive for you to be vigilant during the year ahead. Would it be easier if the president of the A.E.A were chosen by lot? Then every fifth economist would need only to prepare a short inaugural address knowing that everyone else was simultaneously preparing a similar address, and thus expose the relationship at the post annual meeting reception. It is a common error to think of the A.E.A. as simply a publisher. It is, of course, a proud distinction to serve on an editorial board or head as editor a staff. But the value of A.E.A. membership comes from its members’ attentiveness to all the things the A.E.A. does: organizing annual academic meetings which have emerged as an important focus for much of the profession; publishing two journals which reflect the state of the art in research in economics; reporting to our membership information on the economics job market; alerting those of us in the academic community, as well as those of influence in the world outside the academy, to pending legislation and appropriations which call for economic analysis; providing forums to discuss teaching and other matters important to academic economists; and providing for Ph.D. students an initial opportunity for presenting their work in the company of their advisors prior to defending their dissertations. Please weigh the importance of these activities of the A.E.A. and then give it its monetary reward.
