1. Introduction

First, homework is one of the most common student learning experiences. Elementary school children regularly have homework, and students in middle and high school report spending more than a few hours a week on their assignments. Our goal is to leverage what makes homework enjoyable and productive for the supported child for the development of new interventions. Our project’s focus is on using what is already working well in learning support. Even though the project participants are children and adults, we hope that this perspective is in line with our young ones who hinted at some positive aspects of skill development, opportunity to complete travel moments, and others.

Twice a year, we publish the supported child’s work time, giving us an opportunity to understand how supported by adults the child’s learning process was in both school and non-school times. Understanding who is responsible for the unseen, quiet work of learning, for example homework, is important to our research goals. Our ongoing work focuses specifically on homework at home – which includes reviewing, editing, and support of learning sessions outside of the classroom. We prioritize this area of learning support for a few reasons.

As part of our research, we conducted a study asking 166 parents and children (average age 8) to take photographs of their daily experiences. These “day in the life” narratives followed up on a previous analysis we published, in which we looked at the homework help processes of parents who were supporting their child’s learning.

Research shows that some students regularly receive higher amounts of homework than experts recommend, which may cause stress and negative health effects. For kids in first grade, that means 10 minutes a night, while high school seniors could get two hours of work per night. Experts say there may be real downsides for young kids who are pushed to do more homework than the “10-square rule.”
