Recent progress in natural language processing has brought us examples of high-class, human-like fake stories and other problems belonging to the same paradigm. However, there are only a few first steps made to consider a broader utility, like the potential usefulness for human-like writing for AI-driven actions or the market size of AI-driven knowledge generation at scale.

This paper illustrates that AI achieves the greatest benefits when it is less tasked with disclosing its intellectual potential and more encouraged to expand the horizon of our potent ideas.

We have outlined the opportunities and concerns in AI writing and suggested how the interaction between humans and machines can be optimized. Through a large-scale analysis, we have examined the usage and reception of AI-created content and provided empirical evidence in favor of the power of human touch in AI writing. Our analysis provides implications and directions for future research and practical guidance on how organizations can best mobilize AI as a tool for writing tasks. Interestingly, as we reviewed the implementation and evolution of AI for creating written content, we identified three types of writing tasks that are rarely better or equally suited than human beings: reproducing text based on a large volume of training data, writing text devoid of humanistic sentiments, and crafting choreographic-style sentences. Given the preeminence of writing, it might be surprising that those tasks are only 3 out of hundreds of writing tasks that exist. For many of the rest, while AI appeared less competitive than humans, they can excel at what they do when working with humans. It is essential that writers and researchers are realistic and selective when deciding which writing tasks ought to be accomplished by AI and of AI’s role in human-centered writing processes.
