If we want to get accurate information, we have to follow a step-by-step process. We need to go to the right source and find clues until we are truly confident about what we have found. By doing our homework step by step, we can train ourselves to solve problems in a critical way and become independent individuals. Step by step, from finding a clue to being confident about what we have found, we can become creative individuals because we can discover many new things while researching and improve our research. This is different from asking someone else to do our homework for us. It is better if we do it ourselves, even if we only find a few things, take notes, and ask our teacher about them. Finally, when we obtain accurate information by doing our homework, we can share it with others who don’t know and explain to them how we obtained the information. This is different from asking others or simply copying from something without being sure if it is correct or not. We should let others know that our homework is the correct answer.

These are both vital tools in moving the knowledge from their short term into long term memory and are best done independent of the teacher, although the teacher needs to guide the students to this realization. Completing homework will provide much needed practice of content that has been taught at school. The completion of homework other than reading increases in frequency with age. From 7-8 years of age it may be appropriate for a student to complete the homework relatively independently however the parents should still be an active participant in the learning of their young children. By secondary school it is expected that students will be solely responsible for their homework. The student would get sometime to complete their homework independently and then teacher would guide them and provide feedback on their work. Completing homework provides obvious benefits for children with learning difficulties and their parents. At Thebarton Senior College we have created a quiet learning space for students with learning difficulties in year 12 because of the adult responsibilities and the increased role of the student in seeking and managing help from the teacher.

With academic knowledge being the basis for higher learning and progression in employment, it is crucial that we instill good work ethics and learning habits in doing homework to suppress future regret. Higher-paying and satisfying careers require higher education and graduation. Now you can see how doing homework, and completing it yourself, is an integral link to future career opportunities and life success.

In my study I looked at the overall effectiveness of homework, and have come to the conclusion that homework in general, if set correctly has a positive impact on student’s attitudes and behaviors. By developing independent learning skills, not only will students use these skills to complete homework, they will have these skills for life, which will benefit them in all aspects of learning.
