The Importance of Research Proposal Abstracts

1. Introduction

The abstract is perhaps the most important section of your research proposal. It has to be concise, well written, and self-explanatory. It is also the first piece of your research that a reader will see, therefore it has to be clear and focused in order to identify the importance of your research to the field. It can also be thought of as similar to the identification of a ‘patient’s vital signs’ by a doctor in order to assess the gravity of the situation – it ‘extracts the essence’ of your research in order to show the reader what to expect (Willingale). By defining the situations, explaining your research problem, and providing your methodology and overall approach, a reader can make their own judgement on the importance of your work and have an overall feel of how its eventual results will contribute to the field of study. A good abstract will also act as a ‘filtering device’ by which the right people will be able to identify the nature of the work more readily, allowing them to make judgements upon whether or not it is relevant to their own work. This is useful to the writer as an abstract also helps to avoid the irrelevant use of others’ work resulting in a wasted effort, in your case. If the wrong people are unable to understand or take the time to try and understand what is on the surface too complicated, then this may lead to a discouraging negative result in the future.

2. Purpose and Objectives

The primary objective of this research proposal is to provide a comprehensive explanation on the significance of research proposal abstracts in aiding the process of effective communication. It also seeks to demonstrate the key elements of a high quality proposal and present involving issues relating to the supervision of postgraduate candidates. This would include the monitoring of progress, identification of potential problems and the like. This would prove beneficial for future or intending postgraduate candidates, as they are given a clear indication on the criteria of a high quality proposal and what is expected of them during the candidature. The detailed understanding of these criteria and issues would enable them to better prepare themselves for the research process. The significance of this research is underscored by the fact that research proposal is a key indicator on the beginning of one’s research candidature, usually to determine whether a candidate is capable of a research degree. This has been demonstrated by the fact that most of the issues on supervision and criteria of research proposal have come from academics and supervisors whose sole dealing with research candidates.

3. Methodology

The methodology is organized into various subheadings. It starts with the research philosophy which I have chosen to adopt is realism, as I believe this to be the most appropriate as the research will be based on actual observations and interviews with residents. The chapter will then go on to talk about the research approach and why I have chosen this: the case study analyses. The case study analyses will provide an in-depth look into the everyday lives of the Hackney gentrifiers, whereas if I were to use, say, a survey instead, this would obtain mostly quantitative research where qualitative primary data would be obtained. This is because surveys are often conducted using closed questioning, where a case study usually uses open questioning which is largely beneficial when trying to gain insight into an individual’s thoughts and feelings. This would then go on to explain the research strategy to provide a depth of understanding the research design. This is due to the case study method not being a specific technique, plan, or a design; it is an in-depth investigation of a single instance where the methodology will then elaborate on the field research and why I have chosen this as opposed to the other case study analyses and the success of this. Finally, the chapter will conclude with the method of accessing the data of whether it be primary or secondary and the reason why I have chosen this. All of the above is an attempt to focus on the project as a realistic attempt to capture real life as it happens; to do this, it needs to be systematic and careful as is set out in the objectives.

4. Expected Results

Four different futures lie ahead. The immediate impact of the expected result will be positive, providing a step towards credibility for all parties involved. By providing the foundation in which government agencies can enter partnerships, a number of opportunities present themselves. This relationship then becomes a beginning for simulation modeling technology, utilizing it to play out different situations and scenarios to better prepare officials in future decision making. Through a process of trial and error, it is expected that various forms of National Parks decision support systems will come into play. At the culmination of these outcomes, it is probable that many improvements are made to the current situation of decision making, public involvement, and the management of our National Parks. With these now structured systems or models as a guide, the decision making process would largely include public opinion and better the chances of a favorable outcome for USA public lands.

5. Conclusion

Rich and poor examples are provided of the above and the Secret of Writing a succinct restatement of last report. His true findings are that authors do not yet possess the skills to produce an effective abstract, and the training offered by the American Medical Association is a step in the right direction to rectify this. A qualitative analysis by En and Lin identified that there are six characteristic moves in writing an abstract for an article in their field and provides a framework for teaching students of EFL an effective way of writing an abstract.

Why did you do the study? Establish the context of your work in the first part of the report. This will allow the reader to understand the basic contents of the work covered in the article. Step back and imagine that this was the only part of the article you could read. What is the most important information? Next, answer the following questions in your abstract. What did you do? How did you do it? What are your key results? What is the implications of your work? And finally, the reader must keep in mind that the abstract should entice them to read on, or entice them to search for the full article and read it.

Evidence for the different roles of the abstracts indicated that researchers employ the content of each section to serve their distinct desires. For instance, some authors will attempt to write a descriptive abstract first because it is simple to write. Begin by writing the abstract of the research paper. When writing the abstract, you should find the balance between too much information and too little. Keep the following questions in the back of your mind when working on it.
