2. Early Life and Background

Jada Koren Pinkett was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones and father Robsol Pinkett, Jr. Jada showed an early fascination with the performing arts. She began her acting career in 1990, when she starred in an episode of True Colors. She then starred in the television series, 21 Jump Street. She began her career in film, in Menace II Society in 1993. This was followed by many more films. This varied from the critically acclaimed Nutty Professor, and Set It Off, a touching tale of four African American women. Jada never turned away from television, and continued to make guest appearances on various shows. She was a regular on the series, Moesha. Jada has had much success in her career. She has earned many awards for her exceptional performances, including an NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture” for her work in The Nutty Professor. She has also been honored with the MTV Generation Award, in addition to the 2005 Black Women in Film Crystal Award. Jada Pinkett Smith continues to balance her career as an actress, producer, director, author, and recording artist. She continuously supports various causes and charities. She is an active advocate of human rights and has received numerous accolades for her philanthropic work. Currently, Jada resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Will Smith, and her two children Jaden and Willow Smith. She has summed up her life, by saying that she is “just a woman in the world, trying to make a good life and be, as happy as possible.”

3. Rise to Stardom

In 1991, Jada met rapper Tupac Shakur, and they became good friends. Jada even joined him as his date when it was necessary to keep his ex-wife, Keisha Morris, from becoming jealous. The two friends met while Jada was attending the Baltimore School for the Arts, a public high school that provided classes such as Acting, Filmmaking, and others. Jada only met Tupac because he was dating a girl Jada knew while they were both reading for the movie Menace II Society (1993). Tupac came up to Jada’s friend on the set one day to visit her and introduced himself to Jada. The two didn’t hit it off right away, but after a few years, they became very close. Tupac was gunned down in Las Vegas, NV, on September 13, 1996, and died 6 days later from his injuries. Most people would say this quote from Jada accurately described Tupac: “I think that most of the anger or opposition that he would receive was just because of how bad people wanted him to be a certain way. That’s the price of being a genius, that’s the price of being a leader.” A year later, at the young age of 19, Jada would make her film debut in the movie Menace II Society. It was the same movie where she met her friend Tupac. The small part went uncredited, but she did, however, receive a role in a TV show called True Colors, a spin-off of A Different World. Jada played a part as a college co-ed named Lena, who struggled with coping with the racial issues at the school. This show was only short-lived, but it helped launch her to her next few projects.

4. Impactful Roles and Projects

In 2003, Jada secured the role of Niobe by writing a letter to the Wachowski brothers, stating she was a fan of their work on the Matrix series and would love to be involved in any upcoming project. Jada was given the role of Niobe in the video game Enter the Matrix and its subsequent sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. To accompany her voice acting, Jada did many of her own stunts in video game programming and filmed and used for the animation. She also stated in an interview that she wore the Niobe costume and dreadlocks during voice acting to get into character. Enter the Matrix received mixed reviews and was noted largely for its bridging storyline for the two Matrix sequels.

Jada has certainly evolved as an actress over the years. From her early days as a regular on “A Different World” to her latest role in Gotham, she continues to take on roles that challenge her acting ability and add something different to her career. One of her most challenging roles was playing the wife of Ali, Sonji Roi, in the film Ali opposite Will Smith. The film was very well received by critics and fans, as was Jada’s performance in the role. She played a woman who took a stand against the boxing champion and opposed the country’s involvement in the Vietnam War, a far cry from the roles played by Madison or Niobe. The film gave Jada the chance to portray a real-life character in a major motion picture, test her acting skills, and change her physical appearance. She dyed her hair blonde for the role in an attempt to look more like Roi. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to get the real-life story of Roi’s life as the reclusive ex-wife of the champion to help her due to Roi’s death in 2005.

5. Personal Life and Philanthropy

Jada Pinkett Smith married rapper and actor Will Smith in 1997. They have two children, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith (born 1998) and Willow Camille Reign Smith (born 2000). Will Smith’s first son, Willard Smith III, is from a previous relationship. When Jaden and Willow were very young, Jada made the decision to take an extended leave from her acting career to be a stay-at-home mother and wife. About the time her children were preteens, Jada came to another major turning point in her life. It was at this time that she realized that she had abandoned her true self and aspirations in attempting to make her family her sole focus, an error that ultimately had a negative impact on her marriage and family. This realization allowed her to do two things: bring her family closer together with their agreement to begin taking “family time” throughout the year during breaks from work and to lead her to a new mindset in which she began to factor her desires into family decisions, balancing her needs in conjunction with what would be best for her husband and children. This period of Jada’s life became the origin of an insightful project and website launched in 2003 called “Project Red Pump”. The website serves as an open letter to all women in an attempt to point out and solve problems thwarting many women from reaching their personal and professional potentials; their neglect to take care of themselves. Due to her content/co-producer credits for The Matrix Revolutions and Enter the Matrix video game, Jada partnered with the Wachowski brothers to produce the documentary, The Matrix Revisited. After this, she returned to the Hollywood scene with a role in the popular and risqué movie, Collateral (2004) and made a major role as Niobe in the The Matrix sequels. As of late, Jada can be seen in the medical drama, HawthoRNe. Driven by a compelling personal need to make this world a better place for all children, Jada co-founded with her husband the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation. The Smith family is now also associated with the Baltimore School for the Arts and the New Village Leadership Academy in Calabasas, CA. Jada has continuously offered her very strong opinions on societal issues and education, which is the very realm she plans to influence.
