1. Introduction

The aim of this study is to show the reader the advantages of using Canva Presentations, especially compared to the usual way of creating a PowerPoint presentation. The way I’m going to go about this is presenting the reader with the usual way that people create a PowerPoint presentation. Then I’m going to show how to create a presentation with Canva. Finally, I’m going to compare the two and also elaborate on the advantages of using Canva. By the end of the study, the reader should have a pretty clear idea of what a good presentation and a bad presentation entails, and how to avoid making a bad presentation. The reason why I chose this topic is because I strongly believe that everyone should have the skills to create a good presentation. A good PowerPoint presentation is truly hard to come by because it’s pretty time-consuming and most people don’t really know the full capabilities of PowerPoint. With that being said, let’s get to it!

2. Enhancing Visual Communication

We have all seen presentations in which special effects and design elements are used excessively to give the presentation a flare that is both unnecessary and detrimental to the intended message. This is a result of visual appeal being treated as a separate entity from the actual content of the presentation. Often times, the two separate entities never come together, resulting in a visual message that may be quite aesthetically pleasing, but it lacks a defined definition of what the design elements are attempting to communicate. On the flip side, with the content taking precedence, we get presentations with an overflow of information and zero design elements leaving the viewer with a feeling of redundancy and boredom when their mind has not been stimulated visually. With a perfect combination of visual appeal and content, design and information can proactively define each other, leaving nothing to interpretation. Visual appeal can act to define and solve problems within the actual information being displayed. An example might be using computer animation to visually demonstrate how a complex system works. This can be a very powerful tool vs. a static diagram and it leaves less to the interpretation of the consumer as to how the system is supposed to work.

Basically, creating stunning slide presentations is a newly discovered art form. The creativity, the communication, the harmony and the discord, the way information is expressed and the visual problems that are solved, give perfect visual communication the potential to be a powerful outlet for both the creator of the presentation and the consumer of the information being conveyed. The mass appeal of presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint has led to a form of visual communication in which the content and the visual appeal of the design take center stage and they are treated as two separate entities.

3. Creating Engaging Content

Your content needs the viewer to interact and engage with your message. The Canva ‘presentation’ format is ideally suited to creating engaging content. To format specific characters within a text box, first click and drag to highlight the characters that you want to format. Then, right-click and choose the “Format Font” option from the right-click menu or access it from the Home tab. This will open the Format Font dialog box. Here, you can apply various changes such as the font used, font size, and font style. You can also set font color, underline styles, effects, and character spacing. All changes made will only affect the selected characters within the text box. Click “OK” once you have made all desired changes.

Once you have added text to a text box, you can edit the text or apply custom formatting to specific characters directly from within the text box. To edit the text, simply click into the text box and highlight the text that you want to edit. You can then apply the desired changes.
