The Importance of Completing Homework Independently

1. Introduction

Homework constitutes the bane of a student’s existence; it is this bitter pill that a student cannot spit out. It is not a question of whether or not students should have to complete homework or how much; rather, it is a question of how to go about the process in the most effective manner. There are many how-to books and articles which discuss various means to an end for completing homework quickly and accurately, but few of them will help a student to truly master concepts. Instead, they teach how to master a teacher’s expectations of a student’s knowledge. Thus, homework becomes busy work, rather than a tool for continued success in the learning process. Homework is an essential tool students will need in order to achieve academic success. When used properly, homework becomes an extension of school time which allows for greater development of the thought processes learned in school. With the proper mindset and environment, a student could use homework as practice what has been learned in class to further master a concept. This practice is best accomplished when a student self-regulates his/her thought process through recognition and application of learning strategies. The student who practices these learning strategies through homework will achieve higher levels of academic success and will be better prepared for standardized tests, college (and beyond). Independently completing homework is an important step towards gaining that self-regulation and to achieve success, and it is the focus of this paper.

2. Benefits of Completing Homework Independently

Additionally, students who work independently usually have the proper materials to study and complete their homework, therefore reducing the risk of academic failure due to incomplete homework. It is important to understand that homework is a learning tool and like any other tool, it can be misused. The help of others may direct students away from the use of their textbook or notes, which is the source of the vast majority of homework assignments. By not using these resources, the student is only cheating themselves of the practice and reinforcement the assignment was designed to provide. So, seeking help is not the problem, but seeking help to the extent that the student is no longer working independently. In today’s society, seeking help on difficult assignments has become an essential not an option with the popularity of the internet linking students to tutors from around the world. Whether you agree or disagree with this new societal trend, one thing remains the same, students can now access a wealth of information to help them understand their assignment. But, it is still up to the student to use this information to work through the difficulty. The advantage to the student of this method is that they may find an easier time understanding a confusing topic and may learn something above and beyond what the teacher was hoping to convey. This, and exacerbation of comprehension are the fruits of successful independent work, both of which result in better grades and a sense of accomplishment.

3. Consequences of Seeking Homework Answers

Fig. 3.1 is an example of the impact of seeking answers to homework. In this study, when a teacher assigned homework that the student did not understand how to complete, we would call this non-academic homework. With this type of homework, a student who seeks answers is doing so to avoid further pain. He has no intention of learning the material because he has already formed a belief that he cannot understand it. Because the student has no intention of learning the material, his effort to seek answers will be low. This can be seen in Fig. 3.1 by the shallow slope of the supply of answers curve. If the student is working on homework that he believes he can understand, he will approach this academic homework with the intention of learning the material. The student may have varying levels of confidence that he can get the correct answer, and thus differing beliefs in the marginal cost of seeking an answer. To maximize the efficiency of this operation, the student will seek an answer to every problem for which the marginal cost of seeking an answer is less than the marginal benefit. This student will benefit from taking the easiest route to understanding the academic homework, and seeking answers is often the easiest route. This student will assume that seeking given high school math answers is a better learning tool than tackling a subject he does not understand. However, in some cases, the student will decide not to try and understand, get it wrong the first time, and learn from mistakes because the marginal cost is too high. After deciding to seek the answer to a problem, the student will compare the cost of getting the answer right himself to the cost of just asking for the correct answer. He usually chooses the second choice.

4. Strategies for Effective Homework Completion

Praise and reward: Remember to give your child lots of praise and positive reinforcement. Support and encouragement are more effective than punishment – especially when the homework is too hard, too easy, or simply tedious. If you think the work is too hard, too easy, or inappropriate for your child, notify the teacher and discuss the matter. If your child has not received any homework, this may also be a good opportunity to talk to the teacher. A task well done may also be celebrated with a special activity such as a visit to the park or a favorite meal. However, check that the set work is your child’s best effort before doing so!

Provide a suitable work environment: Make sure that your child has a suitable place to do his or her homework. Ideally, this should be a well-lit room with a desk, comfortable chair, and no distractions. The area should also be kept relatively tidy and well-organized. Some children find it helpful to sit at a small desk in their bedroom. It is important to let your child work in the way that he or she prefers. For example, some children concentrate better with music in the background, while others prefer total silence. Although self-discipline and the ability to work alone are important skills, it is also necessary for your child to be able to work away from you. This will encourage independence and prevent over-reliance on adult help. Try to strike a balance between providing help and support and giving your child the time and space he or she needs to develop confidence and the ability to work independently.

Take control: As far as possible, make sure that your child does his or her homework at the same time every day. Your child is more likely to concentrate on the task if he or she does it at the same time each day. Also, it is easier to supervise a particular activity consistently than to keep tabs on various activities on different days.

5. Conclusion

It can be difficult to understand at the beginning, but homework has its all importance and purpose. As a conclusion, homework has much relevance to our education system compared to the few things that are to be debated. It’s the duty and responsibility of a teacher to inculcate the homework habits through their effective and convincing teaching approach. With the full support and cooperation of the parents, a student will definitely understand and realize the importance of homework. Homework can surely have its effects if it is done repeatedly and seriously. Through some research, it has been proven that students understand the concepts that are being taught by the teachers through homework. Also, by doing homework, students are guided and encouraged to take initiatives to develop the skill of learning how to learn, in problem solving, and asking for help. Students also develop a sense of self-discipline and responsibility from doing homework and can have the satisfaction of a job well done. When homework can provide practice that is relevant to the work of a parent who is helping the student, for example, English homework using the parent’s mother tongue to explain. Homework helps parents to have a clear picture of the education their sons/daughters are receiving and offer additional encouragement, insights, and problem-solving strategies.
