The Importance of Completing Homework Independently

1. The Negative Consequences of Using Online Homework Answers

It can be very easy to type up a few words on the internet and come up with various solutions to math problems, no matter how difficult the math problem is, given it provides the answer. This is an easy way out of doing the work, and most of the time it’s inefficient. It does not provide a proper explanation and method on how to achieve the answer. This is what leads high school students into thinking they can use these methods for tests and quizzes. Since the method on how to receive the answer was not shown in class, the student is required to re-teach themselves, which can be time-consuming. Lastly, online homework answers are unreliable. Math problems have multiple methods to solving them. Sometimes the method the teacher teaches is not the fastest or easiest way to go about solving the problem. The teacher can post a quiz or test with a few of these problems, and the students could get them wrong despite getting the same answers that are posted online. The student will be puzzled and not understand why they got it wrong. This will lead to the student thinking the teacher made a mistake and it’s just a big misunderstanding, when in reality the problem wasn’t done correctly.

2. Developing Critical Thinking Skills through Independent Homework Completion

This provides a challenge as it has been proven that students are becoming more dependent on teachers and are reluctant to partake in tasks that have uncertain outcomes (Cox, 2001). This has led to the development of scaffolded tasks, such as the completion of science experiments which have pre-designed results and a correct method which, if followed, will see the students achieve said results. Unfortunately, this detracts from the need in today’s society for more thinkers and innovators in the workforce, and as such, a middle ground needs to be found. Completing a task such as homework to an independent standard can help foster the development of these skills while still providing a safety net for the student to ask for assistance if required.

The process of learning is facilitated by allowing students to make decisions and judgments and has been cited as desirable attributes for students to be able to transfer into the workforce once their studies are completed (Cooper, 1995). Acknowledging the necessity of critical thinkers, both for their own progression and the workforce of tomorrow, educators are increasingly assigning tasks that are directed at stimulating thought and analysis. The endeavor to prove or disprove theories on a given topic has sometimes been left to the realm of tertiary education, and as such, educators need to develop tasks to entice the development of these skills in youth.

Critical thinking is a desirable cognitive activity for individuals to undergo. This process is representative of an individual’s ability to perform reflective and independent thinking while solving some of the more complex problems. Critical thinking relies on following another person’s thought process and line of reasoning, understanding and internalizing the reasoning and its links to conclusions, self-evaluating the reasoning process and outcomes. Effectively, it is a process of reflective reasoning where individuals can be aware of the adequacy of understanding and seek to use judgment in deciding what is true and what is false.

3. Building a Strong Foundation for Future Learning

The work and study habits learned from completing homework can carry on into high school, college, and into our professional lives. These habits can follow us throughout our lives and have an effect on how we learn new material. If we develop consistent work habits and learn efficient strategies for tackling assignments and tests, we find that it takes less time to do a better job. Moreover, the better the job, the more the student usually enjoys it. Developing a positive attitude toward work well done is an important key to success in school and in later life. Completing homework will help students more readily identify their weaknesses and strengthen their skills through repetition and practice. This will ultimately help students to become independent learners. To be able to function with complete independence starts with being able to learn independently, and setting the stage with good study habits now is crucial. Assigning homework with the expectation that it is to be completed independently promotes self-discipline, a trait that will lend itself well to the student’s future endeavors. Students who learn to identify their learning strengths and weaknesses early on will be better prepared for learning independently in high school and beyond.

4. Promoting Personal Growth and Responsibility through Homework

Lastly, homework prepares students for the future. As adults, we have work to do at home, and it is the responsibility of students to prepare themselves for this in the future. Homework develops study habits and self-discipline, which are vital preparations for the workforce and developing good time management and independent learning skills. Homework also teaches students how to problem solve, think independently, and build up an area of expertise. This is very important for future career success.

While the classroom is the best place for students to learn, parents can provide an environment that may be more conducive to learning than the classroom. A quiet, peaceful environment is ideal to maximize focus and learning, and having this from time to time can be a nice change for students. Another benefit of doing homework is the fact that it is a demonstration of quality work from students. Often times, students cannot demonstrate the quality work that they can do when put on the spot in a classroom environment. Homework enables students to take their time and produce quality work that they can be proud of. This is essential for student development.

Working as a sales assistant, I often come across products with the label “value pack”. This product is an extra quantity of something that is given at the same price. By buying this product, you are simply getting something for nothing as the price remains the same. Homework is like this value pack. It is the extra work that students do at home of what they did in class. By doing this extra work, it will improve various skills students acquire in the classroom. Without the “value pack” homework, the learning process is never really completed. When we only use what we have learned, our memory retention of that learning fades over time. With no further practice, memories and information will simply fade away. Practice makes perfect, and it is never truer than with homework. By further practicing work taught to us at school, it will improve the knowledge and new skills acquired during the day. This reinforcement is crucial to ensure that new skills and information are not forgotten. Homework may also cover in a different environment.

According to the National Association of School Psychologists, “The habits and attitudes developed through homework will benefit general success in life.” This statement, and the continued belief of many parents and educators, that homework is the ‘magic key’ to a prosperous and fulfilling future, is a belief that I have come to hold, after much consideration. With this essay, I will first outline some of the more prominent aspects of homework, then I will take a look at some of the reasons homework is beneficial and lastly, what I believe the real value of homework is.

5. Fostering a Positive Attitude towards Education and Self-Improvement

The first advantage of independent completion of homework is a student’s increased ability to understand and learn new material. When students tackle their homework assignments on their own, they are often forced to take the time to understand and learn new material. If an assignment is particularly difficult, or the student is not completely confident in how to complete it, the student must then take the initiative to further understand the relevant material. This often involves independent research; the student may have to read through his/her textbook or other resources to further learn and understand new concepts. Over time, this additional review of material proves to be quite beneficial. The student develops a stronger understanding of the material because they have reviewed it multiple times during the process of completing the assignment. This will improve the student’s confidence and knowledge in the material and likely lead to an increase in academic performance.

Completing homework to the best of one’s abilities is undoubtedly important for students at all levels. Homework, just like any other aspect of school, is capable of having either a positive or negative influence on a student. The difference in the impact on a student lies in the way the student completes the homework assignment. There are numerous positive ways in which a student can complete homework that will promote sovereign learning and understanding. On the contrary, there are just as many negative ways a student can complete homework that will hinder a student’s learning and understanding of concepts. Completing homework independently uses the student’s own time and resources to complete an assignment with no outside assistance from peers or family. Independent completion of homework is beneficial to student understanding and academic performance during school.
