The Importance of Deserving a Scholarship

1. Introduction

To begin with, the significance of education as a foundation for future success and contribution to the overall well-being of humanity is emphasized. It is stated that today’s job markets are demanding and that in order to succeed, or even gain employment in their respective field, individuals nowadays must be able to set themselves apart from the many others with similar qualifications. The higher level of technical and conceptual skills required for satisfactory work in today’s society requires that everyone have as much education as possible. Therefore, the job market has become a reflection of an education system in which there are not nearly enough available spots to accommodate the influx of individuals. It is then said that, since it is an accepted truth that there is a direct correlation between parents’ income and the quality of education received by their children, there will be many people who, through no fault of their own, will be unable to fund higher education for their children. This point, it is felt, directly addresses the issue of financial need being a sure precondition for acceptance of a scholarship. This is because it is these children of whom it will be said that they are deserving students but, due to financial constraints caused by an unfair distribution of wealth, will be unable to obtain formal qualifications even though they may try. At this stage, it is maintained that, in seeking to serve a just purpose, providers of scholarships should simultaneously consider those students in difficult circumstances and the students fresh from high school whose academic achievements have demonstrated they are worthy of receiving a scholarship (due to the availability of high scholarship rates, the two groups are likely to overlap).

Thus, the key theme of the essay is to urge the centrality of deserving a scholarship. The contention developed throughout the essay is that while financial need is a flat out condition for a scholarship, merit is the predominant factor with respect to which scholarship aspirants are chosen. Support of this view is sought from second college English education who are currently seeking a scholarship in the wake of completing their pre-college training and, therefore, are at the crossroads of embarking upon higher education and entering the workforce.

2. Academic Achievements

If you have a less than impressive academic record and are planning to apply for a scholarship, it is a good idea to first spend some time going through your study notes of the past few years. It may be that cramming for that one extra mark wasn’t worth it in past exams, so the knowledge could have easily slipped your mind. It can also be a good idea to consult an old teacher or lecturer who can help you better understand the areas where you went wrong, and provide you with the correct guidance to improve your academic results. Remember, it is going to take effort to improve academic results, and there is a decision that will have to be made as to whether it is worth the time to achieve the better results. Often your time can be best spent in obtaining full time work and furthering your work experience which in the end may be more beneficial to your career. With that being said, if you have made the decision that you wish to improve your academic results, the following are areas that you can make improvements and how to go about doing so in an efficient manner.

Students aspiring to get a scholarship must possess above average academic achievements. The better the academic results, the more likely it is to impress the committee. It is important that students show that they are committed to getting the best results and completing their studies in a timely manner. Students that have consistently achieved good results will prove to the committee that they are worthy of the scholarship, as the committee will be assured that the student will not be wasting their money.

3. Financial Need

Expenses on college typically do not stop at just paying for tuition. Everything from books, housing, school supplies, and more need to be paid for in order to guarantee one’s success in college. It is a common worry for many students to wonder how they will get by in all of these expenses. Often times a job could not cover all the costs, and relying on parents to pay for miscellaneous items often is asking for too much. This is where scholarship opportunities would be helpful. It is no secret that college is expensive, and those students who would rather spend more time with their head in the books than at work trying to pay off their expenses are targeted by scholarship providers. Sometimes the financial aid office at the college itself has scholarships to offer. Scholarships are always the most attractive way to finance ones education because they do not need to be paid back. Often times a student loan may pay for college, but the student will be in debt post college and paying off those loans for quite some time. If someone qualifies for a student loan, it is obvious that they qualify for a scholarship. The free money could help reduce the amount of loan a student takes, or even replace the loan entirely, however students should remember not to rely on scholarships as guarantee for money because they are competitive, and relatively limited. Offering to qualified students is what makes them competitive. These types of scholarships from the college usually require a separate application than the FAFSA. High school students should ask their guidance counselor about these types of scholarships when it comes time for student to decide where they would like to continue their education. Any opportunity at all to save money at college is an opportunity that is most likely worth taking.

4. Leadership and Extracurricular Activities

At the same time, I have been an ardent tennis player for the past fifteen years and have represented both my high school BYOPD and college team in various tournaments and leagues. The fact that tennis has been deemed an individual sport has not excluded me from the role of a captain and leader on many tennis teams. A particular example was the Queensway Secondary School tennis team. At the age of 16 and in my first year at the International Baccalaureate program, our school’s tennis team had many promising players from different grades. Recognizing the importance of unity in strength, I proposed to assemble all the players into one team which would compete in tournaments and leagues for the betterment of the school’s reputation. With the support of the other players, I took the initiative to register the team for various interschool competitions. The procuring of team jerseys was to create a sense of belonging and pride within the team. This was a huge success, for the players were a team that had won various league championships. Through the initiative of myself and the contribution of each player, to this day it is the best tennis team the school has ever had. I can consider this my first experience of entrepreneurship with a successful outcome.

During my years studying in the UK, I have at times taken on the role of a leader when participating in group assignments. Leading a group towards excelling in an assignment is not an easy task. Given the varied work ethic among students, it is often difficult to motivate others to focus on the task at hand. This is exemplified by a recent group task in which we were asked to make a presentation to an economics class promoting International Securities. It was evident that certain members of the group do not understand the importance of the task. Thus, as a leader, I had to reemphasize to them the task requirements and later monitor their progress in order to ensure that the project was completed to the best of our abilities.

Leadership is defined as the process by which an individual guides others toward an active role in a social organization, making definite contributions towards the organization’s goals. The emphasis is on serving the organization and others to accomplish a task, i.e. one who is responsible for others in a particular group or organization. A person with this can be exemplified by a person electing a leader of a project or captain of a sports team.

An essay must include an official management and also entrepreneurial experience. Explain concisely why you think expecting a formal leadership role early, in addition to providing examples which you actually have to date.

5. Conclusion

Post-secondary education in Canada should be accessible to all, regardless of their financial restrictions. For this reason, there are staggering amounts of scholarships which are offered to encourage and assist students in their post-secondary studies. Scholarships are a symbol of recognition and approval from an organization that believes in an individual’s potential. And to some, it is indeed that pat on the back which they feel they need. Many students are accustomed to the experience of having education being forced upon them. As a result, education can become more of a chore and less of a means of self-betterment. These are not the students who are deserving of a scholarship. A scholarship is not a right but it is an honor and a privilege that must be earned. A student who desires a scholarship has the drive to take his education into his own hands, often steering it towards a direction of individual interest and self-motivated success. This is a student who is concerned with their future and is actively seeking the means to better himself. Often such students may face a financial burden and will have to put their studies on hold while they are forced to work and save money. A scholarship will allow these students to keep their focus on education and to continue to move forward. This is a wise investment for the beneficiary of a scholarship today, will be a leader of tomorrow.

If a student wants to be on an equal playing field with their peers, they must also be prepared to show a commitment in regards to their academics. And one of the few ways to prove that commitment is through a higher education. In these times of financial uncertainty, there is a continual rise in the amount of students competing for scholarships. Realistically, the higher the reward from said scholarship, the more applicants will vie for it. In a complex and competitive society, every member needs to feel that they have an equal opportunity to achieve their potential. Higher education is the very essence of any American dream. It is what means continuing your education at a college or university to improve oneself. It is the booster for a better life. Higher education allows students to step out of their comfort zones and to better discover themselves while opening new doors of opportunity. It allows for a growth in self-confidence and, in turn, a growth in social and economic mobility. This, in itself, is the solid foundation of a prosperous society. Higher education enables the individual to learn the social skills of life as well as giving a chance to grow to their fullest potential. This fosters the type of environment felt by students deserving of a scholarship. These are the types of students who are leaders and role models, they embody a vision for a better future. But without a doubt, times have changed and converting the vision into reality is heavily reliant on financial support. Whether a student is a promising athlete, a top academic scholar, or a person of higher artistic ability, these are the students that can more than likely guarantee a return on the investment to their supporters. These are the students who deserve the chance to prove themselves but also the ones that will dare to make a difference.
